Amityville Busts 2% Cap

Amityville village trustees voted themselves the right to exceed the state mandated 2 % cap on property taxes. There are other municipalities including school districts which have considered voting to exceed the cap which has been championed by Governor Andrew Cuomo..

In the Amityville decision apparently it only takes a vote among the village trustees. In other jurisdictions it will require a referendum vote of 60% of the residents to exceed the state mandated 2% cap.

Another Turbine Proposal

The Suffolk Water Authority has proposed the construction of a wind turbine at the Southold facility as a way to reduce their electricity casts. The turbine which would cost approximately $500 thousand dollars is raising some concern by residents who live in the area. Suffolk Water claims that 25% of their operating costs are for electricity. Just last week the Riverhead town board pretty much abandoned the idea of a wind turbine at the treatment plant as not cost effective.

Three Riverhead Schools Fail AYP

Principals of the Pulaski Street School, The Phillips Elementary school and the High school must prepare School Quality Review reports for the state because the named schools failed to meet the AYP or Annual Yearly Progress standard set for their school.

Governor Proposes Increased Aid To Riverhead
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing an increase in school aid to the Town of Riverhead for the coming year. The amount of aid is expected to be 16% of the school budget or $17.6 million dollars. The proposal is subject, of course, to assembly approval.

Wind Turbine a Goner

It seems that the wind turbine proposal for installation at the sewer treatment plant may be gone with the wind. New analysis of the cost recovery now predicts that the cost (even with the $470 thousand dollar grant) to install and maintain the turbine won't be recovered for many more years than originally estimated making the project less attractive and will probably be shelved.

Weeping Willow Moves Ahead

The Supervisor has signed an executive extension which makes an agreement with NY State Parks and Recreation to share the cost of demolition, renovate and reestablish the Weeping Willow Motel site as a recreation area with parking, boat launches etc. The state's share: $500,000.

Crown Victorias Wanted

The Town is seeking to replace police vehicles which have been damaged beyond repair with new but hard to get Ford Crown Victorias. The Crown Victoria, now out of production, is seen as an excellent police cruiser and some 2011 production models are being sought.

Want a Farmstand? Need Two Acres

Supervisor Sean Walter and several Town Board members would like to change the current standards for farmstands in the Township. Currently the regs require that you have 7 acres in agricultural use before you can place a farmstand near the street for retail farmstand operations.

Walter and George Gabrielsen believe that the 7 acre requirement should be reduced to 2 contiguous acres with perhaps ownership of at least 7 acres somewhere in the Town. Some have felt that the 7 acre rule severely restricted some of the smaller farm operations.

Romaine Wants County to Purchase 150 Acres

Ed Romaine (R) Legislator 1st Legislative District, has requested that the County purchase the 150 acre Beagle Farm on the west side of Edwards Avenue. William Lindsay objects to the proposal unless Riverhead partners in the purchase. Riverhead, unfortunately, is out of preservation money after helping to fund the purchase of the North Fork Preserve. The farm is priced at $59,000 per acre

9-12 Suffolk Change in Meeting
The regular monthly meeting for the Suffolk 9-12 Project has been changed from January 18 to January 19. Still at the Polish Hall at 7 pm. Bring your friends.

Housing at the Baptist Church Center

The First Baptist Church Community Life Center on Northville Turnpike has applied to the town for a permit to construct housing on it's 12.5 acres of property on the Turnpike. In addition to a senior center, recreation areas and assisted living facilities the church is also proposing workforce housing. Initial reaction from the Board (Walter) that the proposed 12 units of housing per acre was excessive and will require many periods of planning discussion.

Wind Turbine Deadline

The proposed wind turbine installation at the Town's sewer plant is rapidly coming up against a deadline. A $470,000 grant for the installation is still available but expires at the end of February and may be lost if a decision isn't reached soon.

School Board to Meet on Tuesday

The Riverhead Central District School Board will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday January 10 in the High School cafeteria. The Board will first meet in executive session at 6 pm and then in public at 7 pm that same evening.

Board Agenda Fires Contractor

Included in the School Board agenda for Tuesday wail be a recommendation to terminate the contract of M.H. Kane for repairs and installation of new doors at various locations in the school system. The Superintendent and the Board indicate dissatisfaction with the quality of the work as performed by contractor M.H. Kane and will seek approval to terminate the $500,000 agreement between the School District and M. H. Kane.

Budget Pledge

The School Board and members have pledged (sort of) to prepare a budget for the 2012-2013 school year year that remains below the state mandated 2% increase cap while also working for the needs of the students.

There had been discussion, in some quarters, that the Board would find ways to go around the 2% cap as mandated by the Governor. This could only be accomplished by issuing a referendum whereby a minimum of 60% of the residents approved exceeding the cap.

Burts Reliable Owner Dies from Burns
The owner of Burts Reliable fuel oil has died from burns caused by the rupturing of a fuel line connected to a tanker truck. John Romanelli 47, was also a former town councilman.

Good News for D.C. Commuters

U.S. Airways has announced that it would schedule two daily flights from Islip-Macarthur Airport to Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. starting on March 25. Flight departures from Islip will be at 6:20 am and 7:49 am with returns from Reagan at 11:35 am and 10: pm.

European-American Commences Pickups

The first trash pickups by European-American Waste Disposal began today January 3. New contractor is said to save $148 a year on property owner's tax bills and will include an extra garbage pickup on the trash pickup day.

Town Officers Sworn In
The entire slate of Town officials who were elected in November were officially sworn in to office in ceremonies at the Hyatt House ball room on Main street on Sunday, New Years Day.

Inauguration Day for Riverhead

The Town has announced that it will hold inauguration ceremonies on New Years Day January 1, 2012 at the East End Hyatt House on Main Street in Riverhead starting at 1 pm.

Those Town officials who were elected in November 2011 will be officially sworn in to start their new terms of office and will include Supervisor Sean Walter, Town Councilmen Jim Wooten and George Gabrielsen as well as the Receiver of Taxes, Town Clerk, Assessors (2) and the Town Justice. The public is invited.

Suffolk Legislature Overrides Levy Vetoes

The Suffolk County Legislature, meeting in special session on Friday voted to override Steve Levy's vetoes on 29 bills including the bill which would repeal the ban on capping the county tax on gasoline. This legislature is out of control and needs some changes in it's makeup. This is one of the highest taxed municipalities in the nation and this group wants to be able to tax more. Lets not forget on election day 2012.

Good News at the Curb and Checkbook
The news that the Town had selected a new trash and recycle hauler was good news to the residents. The new contractor is European American Waste Disposal. They have apparently negotiated a better deal meaning a $148 reduction in your tax bill for trash collection as well as an extra day of garbage pickup. (Same day as the pickup for bulk items)

Sears Closing K-Mart Stores

Sears announced this week that it would close up to 120 K-Mart stores across the country. There is no word whether the closings will involve the Riverhead store. The closings come as a result of disappointing holiday sales figures for both K-Mart and Sears which were below the national average.

Taxi Anybody? It'll Cost You

The Riverhead Town Board announced a new schedule of taxi operator fees this week including $500 to have a hack license in the Town as well as operator's fees, drivers fees, drug testing and background checks.

Bellone Names Adviser

Newly elected County Executive Steve Bellone (D) has named District Court Judge Dennis Cohen as his Chief Legal Adviser. Cohen will leave the bench to take on the County position.

Happy New Year in Middle Island

A lucky ticket for the Mega Million lottery drawing worth $206 million dollars was sold at the King Kullen supermarket in Middle Island. Someone is going to have a very happy new year.

Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.

He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself..

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. Town Approves Former Town Attorney

The Riverhead Town Board gave formal approval to the naming of Dawn Thomas to the Industrial Development Agency (IDA). Thomas is the former Town Attorney who was replaced when she left to take a position as an assistant to a Supreme Court judge. There were several objections voiced to her appointment including some Town issues and possible ethical considerations while working for a judge who may have to judge IDA projects.

Christmas Recital at Mercy

The students at Bishop McGann-Mercy presented a very entertaining evening this past Tuesday. The choirs (two), the symphonic and jazz bands were outstanding. The string quartet, a new feature, was especially interesting and innovative. The jazz ensemble was excellent playing both Christmas and pop numbers. Great showing.

Define Payroll Tax Deduction Please

At this hour the two houses of Congress are at loggerheads in trying to solve the Payroll Tax Deduction bill. Speaker of the House Boehner says the bill passed by the House which included a Payroll Tax Deduction for one year is the way to go whereas Senate majority leader Reid says the Senate bill with just a two month deduction period is his final offer.

Never mentioned is the fact that the deduction they both speak of is actually a reduction in the amount contributed to the Social Security fund (already in dire straits) as well as a reduction in the individual's Social Security account.

Overtime, a reduction in the fund and personal contribution will reduce the amount you will receive at retirement. How long can you live with a Payroll Tax holiday? At some point the country must return to the full Social Security contribution or be faced with a severe shortage in all Social Security accounts.

How Did Tebow End Up In Riverhead?

Tim Tebow is not the greatest quarterback to play in the NFL but he is a major topic of discussion. His ability as a QB with the Denver Broncos improves every week and he has had a remarkable run of wins. He is up against a formidable opponent this week, however, in Tom Brady and the Patriots.

This week he managed to make news in Riverhead when a few high school students decided to emulate the famous Tebow kneel down for prayer. After several days of this school officials decided to suspend the students for disrupting the hallway traffic in the school.

Tebow responded to the students plight by supporting their activity but warned that they had an obligation to honor the school authority.

There is a thin line between emulating an idol and mocking him. If the student's action was the latter, the school and Tebow are owed an apology.

Solar Farm May be a Goner.

It appeared for a while that Long Island Green Energy had developed a worthwhile idea for the now capped landfill on Youngs Avenue. L.I. Green proposed to cover the vacant area with hundreds of energy producing solar panels and would pay the town a leasing fee for the privilege of utilizing the property. The town decided that such an idea would have to be bid and with that L.I. Green Energy has chosen to walk away from the proposal. Stay tuned. It may be back.

National Grid is Out

Long Island Lighting has decided that National Grid would no longer be the utility service provider for operations on Long Island. LILCO has selected PSE&G as the new service agent for the island. PSE&G has, of course, been a long time service provider for New Jersey.

Village Wants to Bust 2% Cap

The Village of Lindenhurst will hold a hearing this coming Tuesday (12/20) to discuss the possibility of voting to exceed the NY State mandated 2% property tax increase cap. This may be the start of a trend.

There are already rumblings coming from the Riverhead school board about how the 2% school tax cap is "unsustainable".

Legislature Votes to End Tax Cap
In an odd move in these tough economic times, the Suffolk Legislature has voted to remove the tax cap on gasoline sold in the county. The move would enable the county to raise additional taxes on gasoline sold at the pumps for vehicles or on the waterways for boating. The vote was 10-7 with all Republicans and one Democrat voting against the measure. Executive Steve Levy says that he will veto the bill. Democrats are unlikely to get the 12 votes needed to override the County Executive's veto.

One more example of why the citizens of Suffolk County should vote to change the balance of power in the legislature.

School Daze

Riverhead school Superintendent Nancy Carney now says that the 2% cap imposed by Andrew Cuomo and approved by the State legislature is "unsustainable". The school board and the superintendent are in sync on this one and seem to be saying that they were not aware of the impact that the 2% cap would have on their budget. Specifically, if the district adheres to the mandated cap, Riverhead schools will be $3.1 million dollars short and will have to make drastic cuts to stay under the cap.

Now this is the same Superintendent and school board that campaigned vigorously for that $78 million bond issue only to announce (immediately after it's passage) that the schools faced a $3 million dollar shortfall.

The law says that the school budget may not exceed the 2% cap unless 60% of the residents vote to exceed it. Is this Board now maneuvering to have the residents of the district take a vote on exceeding the cap? What is the real story? Has this Board and Superintendent been upfront with the citizens? There are many questions that need answers.

EPCAL...Mixed Use Proposed

Preliminary studies of the Riverhead owned property known as EPCAL seems to recommend a mixed use of the 2400 acre plus property. This would include suggestions for industrial, commercial and even some residential but no casinos or racetrack (motorsports). The original transfer of the huge parcel by the U.S. Navy specified that the property was to be developed for economic benefit to the town. There have been many false starts, contract withdrawals and forfeits as well.

Recommendations by this blogger for a multiplex cinema, similar to Island 16, an ice hockey arena for public, league and scholastic use and several retail anchor stores have not generated any interest.

Breaking Ground at Summerwind
County and Town officials did the ceremonial shovel photo op this week signifying the start of the Summerwind project, a 4 story, 52 residential unit structure which will include a 100 seat restaurant and 5700 square feet of retail space.

School Closings a Worry

Repeated stories in the media about school closings across the Island. First we heard that 6 Catholic elementary schools could possibly close this coming year. Then there are reports that two more elementary schools would close in Nassau (one in Bellmore). Now there is a proposal to close 2 of the 6 elementary schools in West Islip. Is this a question of funding or reduced enrollment? Possibly both but a trend that bears watching.

County Adds 50 Acres to Purchase

The County legislature has already approved the purchase of the 300 acre North Fork Preserve for use as a major parkland and now it wants to add another 50 acres to the total parcel. It has started the ball rolling by ordering an appraisal of the additional land to determine a purchase price.

Lobster Roll Will Stay

The owner and operator of the Lobster Roll restaurant on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow has announced that the Lobster Roll restaurant will remain in the present location and will continue to operate along with the shopping center.

Deer Hunt at EPCAL

The town will allow deer hunting at EPCAL for a short 11 day period

from January 9-21. A lottery for a limited number of permits will be held at Townhall on December 19.

Suffolk OTB Bankruptcy Invalid?

Federal Bankruptcy Judge Carla Craig has declared that the Suffolk OTB bankruptcy filing under Chapter 9 was prepared incorrectly and therefore, the OTB does not have the protection which it had sought. Most of the OTB betting parlors had been closed with just a few remaining open. The status of those which remained open, in view of the current ruling by Judge Craig is now in question.

Islip Supervisor (elect) Wants Resignations

Newly elected Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci (R) has asked that 25 townwide department heads tender their resignation to the new administration along with another letter requesting an evaluation if they desire to remain in the town government following the new administration takeover in January.

Pindar Installing Wind Turbine

Pindar Vineyards has announced that it will install a 100 watt wind turbine on vineyard grounds. Several other vineyards have already installed similar turbines but of much lesser wattage. Pindar expects that the wind power unit will provide most of the electrical power needs for the vineyard. Pindar owners credit Southold Supervisor Scott Russell with speeding up the permit process enabling them to complete the project in time to be eligible for a goverment 30% grant.

Middle School Break In
Two burglars are being saught by Riverhead police as suspects in the breakin of the Middle School on Harrison and the removal equipment and cash.

McCain Disses The Island

Sen. John McCain of Arizona made a joke that backfired on him yesterday. In a speech before the Senate McCain was quoted as saying, "Last I checked, Long Island was a part - albeit sometimes regrettably - a part of the United States of America". Some congressmen passed it off while others took exception to McCain trying to make a joke at the expense of Long Islanders.

Tea Party Sues Mayor

The Richmond (Virginia) Tea Party has sued the mayor of that city for expenses incurred by their tea party rally in the town center. They state that the mayor (Dwight Jones (D) has authorized payment (taxpayer money) of all expenses incurred by the "Occupy Richmond" bunch and personally endorsed and attended the Occupier rallies.

Suffolk Legislature Approves Budget

The Suffolk County Legislature has approved a $2.7 billion dollar budget for the county. Supervisor Levy tried to ax some 700 county jobs to hold down expenses but this has been reduced to just 88 jobs.

A new way of paying out-of-county tuition costs will now be the responsibility of the Town. For example students residing in Suffolk and attending a community college in Nassau are charged an out-of-county tax by Nassau. Until now this tax has been paid by Suffolk County. These taxes will now be paid the towns.

New Riverhead Bond Issue

Riverhead Town will issue a $22 million dollar bond to pay for repairs and maintenance throughout the Town. The bonds will be rated at Aa2 very close to the AAA rating.

Wilkinson is the Winner

East Hampton Supervisor Bill Wilkinson (R) has been declared the winner in the race for Supervisor. A recount confirmed his win over Zachary Cohen (D) by a small margin. (Wilkinson 3403 to Cohen 3388 votes).

Privatize Animal Shelter

Riverhead Town is moving closer to privatizing the Animal Shelter on Youngs Avenue. Contracts have been written which if all parties are in agreement, will turn over the operation of the animal shelter to NFAWL (North Fork Animal Welfare League). The currently agreed price is $200,000 annually. NFAWL now operates the Southampton shelter. NFAWL representatives state that they can provide more personnel for daily care at the shelter.

It Is Official - Croci Wins

Tom Croci (R), former aide to newly elected State Senator Lee Zeldin, has now been officially declared the winner in the race for Islip Town Supervisor. The incumbent, Phil Nolan (D) lost in the final tally 25,026 for Croci and 24,683 for Nolan.

Solar Farm at BNL Not Popular With Everyone.

The huge solar farm on the grounds of the Brookhaven National Laboratory is not being celebrated in all quarters despite the endorsement by Sen LaValle.

Jacques Ditte of the 9-12 Project has strongly criticized the Senator for just another government project that will probably not benefit many citizens.

County Exec Blasts Legislators
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy blasted legislators yesterday for voting to raise property taxes one day after elections. Surrounded by tea party members, Levy proposed a change to the Suffolk charter which would require legislators to vote on tax changes prior to an election.

Occupy Wall Streeters Told to Move On
NYP units were out in large numbers today to force the "Occupiers" to cease their loitering and end their pointless occupation of the city streets and parks. More than 100 arrests were made as the radicals attempted to hold on. Meanwhile workers from the Wall Street area were fighting back with signs and direct confrontation. The indecisive actions or lack of action by Bloomberg has caused this radical movement to hang on two months longer than it should have. Lets face it Giuliani would have ended this within 24 hours of the start.

Republican Legislators Vote to Raise Taxes

Despite the Republican Party of Suffolk campaigning on a promise to not raise taxes, 4 out of 6 Republican legislators, meeting on the day after the election (Wednesday November 9) voted to raise taxes. The Republican legislators who voted in favor of the increase included Ed Romaine, Tom Muratore, John Kennedy (Minority leader) and Lynne Nowick. Read Frank Seabrook's Liberty Report on this!

Riverhead School Board to Sell Property

Members of the Riverhead School Board meeting at their regular weekly session agreed, by resolution to consider the sale of 27 acres of property owned by the school system in Aquebogue. The acreage, on Tuthill Lane, was acquired by the district in 1965. It was originally intended for an elementary school. Previous attempts to use the property for a YMCA met with community opposition.

School District Establishes 2011-2012 Levy

The school district tax levy for the 2011-2012 school year will be $86,794 which may be partially offset by funding from the STAR program. That amount has not been specified. The tax increase for property owners has not been announced.

Library Tax Levy Also Announced

The 2011-2012 tax levy for the Riverhead Public Library is $3,061,107. The tax levy for the Baiting Hollow library is $11,600.

Solar Panels For the Landfill?A Long Island Green Energy company is proposing to use the landfill on Youngs Avenue as a solar energy farm by installing solar panels over much of the 76 acre parcel.

The proposal, which will be heard by the Board in detail on Thursday is supposed to provide enough electric energy for the Town to partially pay for the Town's annual power bill which is over $2 million dollars.

The Riverhead School Board listened to a strong objection to the recently passed bond issue made by one of the district residents. Specifically mentioned was an invasion of privacy by releasing private telephone numbers and the suspect timing of announcing a budget shortfall after the bond was passed.

The Wading River/Shoreham Wildcats and Bishop McGann-Mercy Monarch football squads were scheduled to meet in a showdown game at Shoreham today at 2 pm. Mercy may have to struggle to win a playoff berth after two tough losses while the Wildcats have a 5 and 1 record.

Another Loss for the Island

RX Therapeutics, a Farmingdale biotech company will move the company to St. Petersburg, Florida and 25 employees along with it. Florida Governor Rick Scott says the company will also add an additional 15 workers in his state.

Occupy Wall Street Losing Support

The residents living in the downtown area of NYC are getting pretty fed up with the dirt, the noise and the behavior of the Occupiers. They want their streets back and they want their parks back (and cleaned up too). Bloomberg is looking at the permit situation and may take some action. Really!!!!

East End Rowing has made application to the town to conduct a rowing regatta on November 13, 2011.

CDA Block Grant

The Town says that it expects to receive $117,523.52 in a block grant from the Federal Community Development Block Grant program. Residents of the Town are invited to submit their suggestions as to how the funds may be spent at the scheduled Town Board meeting on November 1, 2011 at 2 pm.

Flanders Civic Leader Accuses School Board of Dishonesty and Suspect Funding in Recent Bond Voting. (see Taldone)

Flanders resident Vince Taldone, in an Op Ed piece in the Riverhead News Review has accused the Riverhead School Board of manipulating the bond vote through a series of questionable practices including scheduling PTA meetings on same day as the vote, moving voting machines from a central location to local venues and hiding the source of funding that supported the bond effort.

Taldone also questioned why Cotton-Degrasse waited until after the vote to announce a $4 million dollar shortfall in the coming school year budget.

Riverhead Residents Approve Bond Issue

Voters in Riverhead approved the $78.3 million dollar bond issue by a margin of just 3%.

The final tally was 2330 votes YES and 2096 votes NO.

The second proposition seeking approval of a $6.9 million dollar bond for construction of a second gym at the high school was defeated.

Final tally on the second gym was 1760 votes YES and 2570 votes NO.

(The second proposition was contingent on the first proposition passing.)

(Numerous complaints are being voiced regarding the passage of the bond issue. Claims that an important college fair at the high school had to be postponed because of the scheduled vote as well as the scheduling of special PTA conferences to be held on the same day to ensure parent attendance at the schools.

Comments also being heard that breaking up the voter venues was confusing for some. Some complained that absentee ballots were hard to come by. Especially questionable is the announcement that there would be a probable shortfall in the 2011-2012 school budget. Why did the announcement come after the vote?) Stay tuned!

Legislature Approves Land Buy

The Suffolk County legislature on Tuesday, approved the purchase of 311 acres in Northville to be known as the North Fork Preserve. Purchase price was $18.3 million dollars. The land buy was passed by a 14-3 vote although William Lindsay, the legislature's presiding officer attempted to block pending proposals.

Arrown Electronics of Melville, the region's largest publicly traded company, will move it's headquarters off the Island to Colorado. Helping to solidify the deal was an $11.4 million dollar tax credit granted by Colorado.

The Controversial Bond Issue

On October 11 residents of the Riverhead school district will vote on a $78.3 million dollar bond issue proposed by the Riverhead School Board. A second proposal asks for approval of a $6.9 million dollar bond to support construction of a second gym at the High School.

According to the mailers sent out to all residents, the larger bond is to fund various renovations, repairs and additional classroom space throughout the district. While there is some criticism by residents as to the necessity for the repair and space projects the strongest opposition comes from those who object to the bad timing of the bond issuance. Many who object ask the same question over and over. Why haven't these urgently needed projects been started or partially paid for through a system of reserve funding and daily maintenance? In other words, do what you can over each school year, one year at a time.

No doubt that much blame can be placed on previous school boards, which, over the past 5 or 10 years, could have had the foresight to target some of those areas that were in such poor repair.

In this era of a terrible economy, high unemployment, high property taxes and limited help from Albany this Board is asking a lot of it's residents and we strongly urge them to go back to the drawing board on this one.

The Preserve Journal recommends a No vote on both bond proposals.

Altschuler vs Bishop

It is now almost certain that Randy Altschuler will repeat his attempt to unseat Congressman Tim Bishop in his bid for another term. Altschuler has all but wrapped up his backing from Republicans and Conservatives. Altschuler ran a very close race against Bishop in 2010 and this record of vote getting has not gone unnoticed by the GOP and Conservative parties.

McCaughey vs. Gillibrand

Betsy McCaughey, former Lt Governor under George Pataki and very strong health care advocate is being pushed to oppose Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in the run for the U.S. Senate next year. McCaughey is a high profile, health care expert who has made numerous appearances before Congress and was the primary antagonist in the fight against Hillary Clinton's health care plan. She disagreed with Pataki on many issues when he ran the State and even ran for Governor as an independent when Pataki ran for reelection.

Calverton Homes Without Power

42 Calverton homes and businesses were without power on Tuesday morning just one day after it was announced that power had been restored to all homes and businesses on the Island. Authorities were expecting to have power restored by 1:30 in the afternoon.

Riverhead Town Offers Cleanup Help

Town Supervisor announced that in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene town residents will be able to cart their dead tree branches, brush and other foliage to the Yard Waste site on Youngs avenue. The Yard Waste site will be open with extended hours from 7 am to 7 pm daily with no permit required.

The Yard Waste site normally used has been filled and the town has opened a new area on the landfill site just down the road a hundred yards.

Yard waste in plastic bags will NOT be accepted.

Not able to get to the site? Tie up your bundles of branches (approximately 4 ft in length and not to exceed 50 lbs) and set them out for the 2nd weekly garbage pickup.

Some Residents Without Power

Some 6868 Riverhead residents were still without electric power as of Monday and word from LIPA was that they may not get their power back until the weekend. Sen. Lavalle was extremely unhappy with the LIPA response.

Town says Rechler still Owes $250 Gs

The Town of Riverhead says that Rechler Industries still owes Riverhead $250 thousand dollars as a result of a failed contract. While the letter of agreement which stipulated the extra payment has actually expired, the Town attorney still feels that Rechler is responsible for the payment. Stay tuned.

Commemorative Parade on 9/11

Calverton residents are planning a parade on September 11 to commemorate the infamous day when so many lost their lives in the World Trade Center, Shanksville and Pentagon disasters. The march will begin at 1 pm at the Riley Avenue School and proceed to the World Trade Center Memorial on the corner of Riley and Edwards.

Shirley Library Stays Open

Many voices in strong opposition to the closing of the Shirley Public Library for extensive repairs and renovation has now turned the unpopular plan into a positive one for the residents. The closing would have caused many layoffs and the loss of this important facility for several months. The library will now remain open, working around the patrons whenever it can.

Last Great Park in Suffolk

Suffolk Park officials are excited about the prospects of a new park on a 311 acre hunting preserve in Northville. Plans call for camping grounds, RV parking and cabins for overnight stays on what was formerly a hunting preserve on the North Fork. Additional plans will be announced in the near future.

English Down, Math Up

Long Island students in grades 3-8 have slid down a bit on English tests but have improved on Math testing. New test results for this grade level show English proficiency at 64.2% and Math at 74.6%.

Nassau residents just recently voted down any chance of renovating the Nassau Coliseum. Charles Wang, owner of the Islander hockey team has started looking elsewhere for a new home for his team. School Board Makes Appointment

The Riverhead School Board has appointed William Hsiang to the Board replacing Angela Devito for the remainder of her unexpired term. The Board had reviewed the applications of some twelve others wishing to be considered for the position. Hsiang had served on the board several years ago. Mr Hsiang has stated that he would not seek to be elected at the end of his term in 2012.

Demolition On West Main
The Weeping Willow Motel is in the final stages of demolition. The Town has begun to take down the structure and is expected to finish the job soon.

Holding Tuition at SCCC

The Suffolk County Legislature has apparently been able to hold the fall tuition at Suffolk County Community College below the $4,000 level. Students can expect a small increase, however, keeping the number at $3996.

Polish Town Fair

The Polish Town Civic Association is scheduling a Polish Town Fair and Carnival on August 19, 20 and 21 having made required application to the Town for permits.

Town Code Revised

The Town Board has revised the building code to change the size of an allowed accessory building from the 100 sq feet to 144 sq feet on properties zoned as residential A-40, RB-40 and A-80. The code change also applies to agricultural, hamlet and natural resources zoning. All have a max height of 12 feet but other restrictions apply. Mercy Names New AD

The Bishop McGann-Mercy school here in Riverhead has named a new athletic director. He is John Lonardo who will leave his position as athletic director at SUNY/Old Westbury to join Mercy on August 1.

Lonardo replaces Paula Nickerson who has retired but has taken a position as interim assistant school principal in South Huntington.

Borders Book Sales

The Borders book store on route 58 is having a closeout book/video sale as a result of their imminent going out of business status. The company failed to find a buyer to takeover the assets of some 399 stores nationwide.

FAA Lays Off 4000

The FAA laid off over 4000 employees nationwide when congress failed to pass legislation to extend funding for the agency. Air traffic controllers were not included in the layoff notices. The interim layoff is only expected to last a few days.

Borders Closing The Doors

Borders Book Stores tried to sell off it's 399 nationwide store inventory but never had any serious takers. Only two liquidation organizations showed any serious interest. It now appears that the Borders store on route 58 will be closing the doors for a final time. A sad loss for people who love books and who especially appreciate a pleasant, clean environment to browse to their heart's content.

Final Approach
The fallen Betty Ford was returning to Grand Rapids for the last time. Her remains were aboard a beautiful United States Presidential airplane painted blue and white. The airport was closed to all other traffic for 30 minutes. Airliners waited patientally on the ground and some in a hold over the GRR VOR. As Ms. Ford's plane, SAM 324, landed, they were cleared to taxi all the way to the end, in front of a thousand people. The tower frequency was absolutely silent.

One unknown airline pilot, in a low, respectful voice, said, "Rest in peace, Mrs. Ford."

After a short pause and in a slow, measured response, the Presidential plane's pilot identified himself:

Bond Issue Scheduled for Oct 11

The Riverhead School Board has tentatively scheduled the much talked about, infrastructure bond issue for a vote on October 11. The bond will be for an estimate $78.3 million dollars and is supposed to be used for renovations to kitchens, lavatories, roofs, windows etc.

Voting is expected to be held at several district schools, not just the Riverhead High School. A second proposition or expense item is also being discussed that would add another $ 7 million dollars to the bond. The expense is for a second gym at the High School which was originally estimated at $4.5 million.

That Train May Have Left The Station

The Town wants to give up the lease it owns for the Riverhead Railroad Station. It was turned over to the town by the MTA providing it was used for a non-profit purpose. The Town has not found a suitable use for it and wants to cut the expense.

How about using it as a satellite police station. Police vehicles are always in the area and it just may control the place of some loitering and the otherwise unsavory atmosphere that exists in that area for train and bus users.

Horton Avenue Suit

12 property owners in the Horton Avenue area have filed suit against Riverhead Town and Suffolk County citing negligence on the part of the Town and County. The area was, of course, inundated with flood waters after a heavy rainstorm destroying many properties in the area.

Hampton Bays Residents Want Out of Riverhead School District

A small group of Hampton Bays residents whose homes are in the Riverhead school district want to secede from the district and rejoin Hampton Bays. A petition signed by 14 homeowners asking for the change is not likely to be approved.

NY Senate Delays Vote on Gay Marriage.

The New York State Senate has delayed voting on the gay marriage issue which had already been approved by the Assembly. Apparently those who oppose the initiative have made their voices heard in their respective senatorial districts and are putting a great deal of pressure on the Senators. Proponents admit that they are still one vote short of a winning margin.

Zeldin Announces: The NY Senate has voted to repeal the MTA Payroll Tax. It still requires a repeal vote by the Assembly.

NY Senate OKs Armory Return

The NY State Senate has approved the return of the armory on Route 58 tothe Town of Riverhead. Supervisor Sean Walter had invoked a "reverter" clause which required the State to return the property when it was no longer being utilized as an armory. The transfer still requires the approval of the Assembly.

The Supervisor has not announced how the town will use the property but it has been suggested in the past that the Riverhead Police Department could occupy the building and grounds once repairs and modernization took place.

This would enable the town to expand town hall offices into a vacated police headquarters building on Howell Road.

LaValle Rejects Gay Marriage Bill

NY State Senator Ken Lavalle (R-Port Jefferson) has stated that he will not vote for the gay marriage bill as proposed by Governor Cuomo. Farm Bureau Supports Zeldin

State Senator Lee Zeldin(R) has announced that the NY Farm Bureau supports his efforts in repealing the MTA Payroll Tax. The Farm Bureau has indicated that the MTA Tax adds considerably to the cost of agricultural production and should be repealed now.

Zeldin Military Funeral Protest Bill Advances

Sen Lee Zeldin (R) is co-sponsor of a bill that would severely limit the ability of individuals or groups to protest the funerals of military personnel. This comes as the result, of course, of groups such as the Westboro Church group who have made unseemly protests in the past. There are some who object to the bill as it may have unintended consequences to those who believe their first amendment rights in situations other than funeral protests could be compromised.

Suffolk Sponsors E-Verify Hearings

The Suffolk County Legislature is sponsoring a series of public hearings to review pending legislation on the E-Verify program. E Verify assures that employers are not hiring illegals. The program has been upheld by courts across the country as a legitimate tool to ensure employment integrity.

Hearings were scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday of this week at the Legislative Meeting hall in the Griffing Building (Court complex) in Riverhead (Tues) and at the Legislative offices in Hauppauge (Wed).

Suffolk Conservatives Nix Working Family

The Suffolk Conservative Party has announced that it will not nominate any candidate for office who also accepts a nominating ballot line from the Working Families group. Conservative Chairman Walsh believes that the Working Families Party is synonymous with Liberals and therefore, opposes the principles of the Conservative Party. Town Signs New EPCAL Pact

Riverhead has entered into an agreement with RKG Associates for an "updated market study for re-use and revitalization" of the property known as EPCAL. The contract calls for a flat payment of $47,500.

This agreement is in addition to the current agreement with VHB Engineering for a planning study on the same property with a cost of over $400,000.

I'm getting dizzy with all these contracts. Doesn't the town have some talented, professionals people who can perform these tasks? Just asking.

Treasurer Seeks Exec Post

Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter has been selected by the Suffolk County Republican Committee to run for the County Executive position now held by Steve Levy. Levy, of course, has decided not to seek reelection to that position and withdrew from any possible nomination.

Steve Bellone, Babylon Town Supervisor, is the Democrat nominee for the County Exec seat and will challenge Carpenter. A debate between the two has not been announced.

$78.4 Million Bond Issue Awaits Date

The Riverhead Central District School Board has reviewed a proposed repair and renovation bond issue but has not yet announced a date on which the public will vote to approve or disapprove the bond.

Lee Zeldin Pushing for Repeal of MTA Tax

State Senator Lee Zeldin is pushing hard for a repeal of the MTA payroll tax which Long Islanders have viewed for unfairly taxing them for MTA's problems. Zeldin has created a special web site petition to encourage Long Islanders to make their voices heard on this issue.

Riverhead Schools Hires Finance Administrator

In a 6-0 vote on Tuesday the school board unanimously selected Sam Schneider and appointed him as the the new Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Finance. He was given a three year contract starting July 1, 2011. Schneider is currently employed by the Shelter Island School System.

$78.4 Million Dollar Bond Issue Presented.

The long awaited bond issue was prepared and finally presented to the public. Originally announced at $80 million dollars, then pared down to $75 million is now coming in at $78.4 million and involves renovations and classroom construction in all schools in the district except Phillips Avenue Elementary. There is no word as to when the bond will be offered to the public for voting.

Suffolk Republicans: No Pick Yet

The Suffolk County Republican Party has yet to officially select a candidate to run for the County Executive job. Randy Altschuler had expressed great interest in taking on the campaign which would have meant that Angie Carpenter and Rick Lazio would have to step aside.

Altschuler had originally planned a return run at the Tim Bishop congressional seat. Switching now to a run for County Exec would leave the congressional seat up in the air.

Riverhead Supervisor is ready to fight for his job and told them so at a Republican gathering at the Elks Club. He accused Democrats of bringing out "leftovers" by nominating Phil Cardinale who will challenge Sean Walter (R) for the Town Supervisor position.

$75 Million Dollar Bond Issue
The Riverhead School District will finalize the long rumored bond issue sometime later this year and present it for a citizens vote. The original $80 million has been pared down to $75 million and represents repair and renovation money for all schools in the district except Phillips Avenue Elementary. It is now estimated that the average homeowner will have to pay an additional $185 a year to service that debt in addition to the school tax increase passed just this week.

New: Riverhead Democratic Committee has nominated former supervisor Phil Cardinale to oppose Republican Sean Walter for the Town Supervisor position. Matthew Van Glad and former State Trooper Marlando Williams were nominated to run for the Town Board.

Wooten Calls Off Bid

Town Councilman Jim Wooten has called off his threat to seek the nomination for Town Syupervisor and instead, will once again look to be nominated for his own position as Councilman. This settles an anticipated heated dispute between Wooten and present Supervisor Sean Walter.

School Budget May 17

The Riverhead Central School District has scheduled the school budget vote for Tuesday, May 17 at the High School gym between 6 am and 9 pm. The proposed $109 million dollar budget is expected to draw many Riverhead residents into the voting booth.

Riverhead GOP Nominating Convention

The Riverhead Republican Party which was scheduled to meet at the Elks Lodge on Wednesday, May 11 to nominate candidates for Townwide offices. has been postponed. Republican leader John Galla advises that scheduling conflicts caused the local GOP to select an alternate date.
The Town Supervisor position as well as Town Council seats are up for nomination. Sean Walter, current Supervisor intends to run again but may be challenged by Councilman Jim Wooten. It is possible that Wooten will end up without a seat on the Town Board if he loses his nominating bid for Supervisor since he has not been nominated for a council seat this time around.

OTB In Bankruptcy

The Off Track betting parlor on route 58 in Riverhead has been shuttered because the Suffolk OTB authority has declared bankruptcy. It was understood that some of the parlors would remain open but most would be closed down. There is no word when or if the betting unit would be put back into operation.

School Vote on May 17

The Riverhead School District budget will be voted on by the public on Tuesday May 17. In a related story, the District has named 24 persons who will be terminated as of June 30 as a result of the budget. In addition the District has identified 39 positions that will be eliminated next year as well.

Where is the Kitten Part 2
Just recently another kitten showed up at our backdoor (with momma cat) looking for a handout of course. It was cold and nasty outside so we obliged with some cat food. Obviously this cycle of feral cats born under sheds and porches was not going to end. We captured the kitten and took it to the Kent shelter where they neutered it for a donation/fee. We kept it quiet and comfortable for 4 days in a cage in our foyer and then released it back to it's natural habitat. We need every one's cooperation to slow down this feral population.

About 60 Nassau residents attending a meeting at Hofstra to review revelopment plans for the Nassau Coliseum, emphatically opposed the plan to include a casino in the project. The Shinnecock Nation was hoping for a positive response from the residents.

The Riverhead Central School Board District has given Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney authority to decide when district residents will vote on a proposed $80 million dollar bond which is intended for various school, parking field and bus barn repairs.

The Suffolk SPCA moved to rescue horses and other animals from the Abbess Farms on route 25 in Calverton. The animals were in serious need of water, feed and medical treatment.

The Town Board moved forward on a plan to ensure that taxis operated within the town use drivers who are safe and drug free and will issue rules to those taxi organizations operating within Riverhead.

Where is this Kitten Now?

This is a photo of a kitten, born in one of our window wells (along with two others) about two years ago. It was early spring so it was still quite cold and a little snowy too. We provided a little food and towels to keep them dry and warm. Eventually the mother cat moved them into the woods. We don't know if they survived the weather or the ever present hawk(s). They are feral and have a better chance than most.

Unfortunately this story is repeated many times over. Kittens are being born under sheds or porches in this and every neighborhood. They hunt for food wherever they can find it, scraps from spilled garbage, field mice or handouts if they are lucky. They too will grow up and produce more kittens who may or may not survive the cold, the snow or the slow starvation.

Households that allow their unfixed male cats to wander the neighborhoods are part of the problem. We really don't need more hungry cats being born under sheds and porches. Need help with this? Check with the Kent Animal Shelter on River Road in Calverton.

Costco Planned on rte 58 (read from Times Review)

Development plans are underway for a Shops at Riverhead project which would include a Costco. The location would be on the north side of rte 58 opposite the Riverhead Raceway. There is no announcement as to a start or completion date of the business development.

Cardinale Encore?

Former Supervisor of Riverhead Phil Cardinale (D), is considering a run for the position he once held until being defeated by Sean Walter (R). Cardinale insists however, that the Riverhead Democratic Party reveal the names of those Democrats who are being screened for positions on the Board. He says that he may not want to make a run for the Town Exec job if he isn't pleased with others that may be on the ticket.

County Deficit Reduction

The Suffolk County legislature has put forth a plan to reduce the County deficit by some $100 million dollars. In a bi-partisan proposal, presiding officer William Lindsay (D) believes that the plan has merit and will be accepted. North Fork legislator Ed Romaine (R) supports the proposal.

Town of Southold Supervisor Scott Russell has taken a leave of absense for personal reasons. Deputy Supervisor Phillip Beltz will oversee all day to day Town operations until Mr. Russell's return.

Gas is $4 at the Pump While the EPA Denies Drilling Permits to Shell Oil In Alaska

Americans are now paying anywhere from $4 to $5 a gallon at the pump for regular gasoline. Meanwhile the EPA has denied air permits to the Shell Oil Co. which means they will shut down any plans to drill in the Beufort Sound this summer. Shell is outraged at the lack of common sense from this agency.

Shell was planning to drill in an area that is over 70 miles from the nearest Alaska village (population 245) and regarded their operation as completely safe. There is enough oil in this area to more than fill the pipeline to capacity many times over.

Baiting Hollow Hill Can be Dangerous

Driving down the Baiting Hollow hill on Sound Avenue requires all of your attention. The accident last week which took one life in a van operated by Mary Haven is especially tragic. Obviously it would be wrong to speculate but the dump truck, loaded with sand and gravel, could have been difficult to handle on that steep hill and a runaway vehicle may have been the result.

Spring Flushing Day

The Town of Riverhead Water Authority is currently in the middle of a 3 week cycle of flushing all water mains. It began on April 17 and continues every night until the end of the cycle. $80 Million Dollar School Renovations
The Riverhead Central District School Board is not giving up on major spending for school repairs. They are putting finishing touches on a spending bill which they will introduce in the fall calling for spending $80 million dollars for various repairs to schools, parking fields and the bus garage, Last year the public turned down a request for a $123 million dollar bond issue for many of the same items.

Wooten Still Has Eyes on Supervisor.

Town Board member Jim Wooten reached an agreement of sorts with Town Republican leader John Galla whereby he would seek another run at the town councilman seat and not make a bid for supervisor. He hasn't ruled out a run for the Town executive seat however and may still make a bid.

East End GOP Screens for Exec

Representatives from the 5 East End Republican Committees have screened three possible candidates to run for the County Executive post now that Steve Levy has decided against a third term.

Meeting at the Polish Hall in Riverhead, the Committee members screened County Treasurer Anie Carpenter, NY State Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick and NY State Senator John Flanagan. Suffolk Commissioner of Jurors Michael O'Donohoe had been screened elsewhere.

Jim Wooten for Supervisor?

Lots of discussion within Town GOP circles this week as Jim Wooten, Town Councilman and Board member indicated that he is interested in running for the Supervisors position and would unseat Sean Walter. Wooten is even looking at running as a Democrat if the GOP won't nominate him. This is getting interesting.

Berezny Not Running

Kathy Berezny, a mainstay of the Riverhead School Board for 9 years will not run in the election for Board members on May 17. Three seats will be up for election by the voters, the one being vacated by Berezny, and the two seats held by the present school board President, Ann Cotten-Degrasse and Vice President Greg Meyer.

Patty Sapienza-Brown will seek one of the seats. Interested candidates for the school board must by residents of the school district and submit petitions with 73 signatures by 5 pm next Monday to be eligible for inclusion on the ballot.

School Board Approves New Budget
The Riverhead School Board has approved the $109.6 million dollar budget which had been adjusted downward and will be submitted for residents approval on May 17.

Suffolk Community Tuition Hike

Trustees of Suffolk Community College are considering a $192.5 million dollar budget for the coming year which would raise the tuition to $4026. The college would require more financial support from the County to keep the tuition below $4,000.

Cuomo Caps Supes at $175.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to cap school district Superintendent's pay at $175,000. Many school superintendents on Long Island already exceed that figure.

Carpenter for County Exec

Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter will seek the nomination for a run for the County Executive job now that Steve Levy has stated that he will not seek a third term. The long time Suffolk politician, former legislator and now Treasurer, made her announcement at the LaGrange Inn in West Islip.

State Senators Seek LIPA Oversight
Several New York State senators will ask the legislature for more control over LIPA and will seek an oversight panel to examine the utility's rate system.

Senators Want Armory for Riverhead

State Senators LaValle and Losquadro are asking that the State turn over the Armory on route 58 to the Town (at no charge) in accordance with a reverter clause that states that the Armory will be returned to the Town when it is no longer being used as an Armory for the National Guard. Reserve facilities have been consolidated in Farmingdale. Riverhead was the original owner of the property. Sean Walter had previously suggested that the Riverhead PD could be headquartered in the building.

Riverhead Accounting Probe Continues

The investigation into irregularities in the Riverhead Accounting office continues with some individuals obtaining legal counsel to represent their interests. The probe concerns allegations that the Town's facilities and computer equipment may have been used for an outside business.

New Found School Aid Changes Budget?

Not so much. Why is it that the newly allocated $600,000 in school aid from the state fails to reduce the tax levy by an appreciable amount? It is still at 5.23% with spending increase held at 1.26%. This includes using $3.4 million dollars in surplus funds to offset the taxes.

Zeldin Ends Salt Water License
The much disputed salt water fishing license for East End anglers has been rescinded by the state. State Senator Lee Zeldin and co-sponsors gathered sufficient votes to eliminate the requirement.

Zeldin Goes After MTA Payroll Tax
Lee Zeldin is determined to get that MTA payroll tax off the books and will hold a rally at Pride Products in Ronkonkoma (4333 Vets Highway) on Sunday April 10 at 1 pm to ask for support. Suffolk residents have forked over $164,000 in the unwanted tax since 2009.

Riverhead Library-Annual Budget Vote

Residents can vote on the Riverhead Free Library Annual Budget Vote on Tuesday April 5 from 10 am to 8 pm. Voting is at the main library on Osborn and Court Street in the Grand Meeting Room.

The proposed annual budget is $3,305,607 or an increase in taxation of $225,531. The Library Board states that this represents an increase of $1.03 per month per household. It further states that the major part of the increase comes from large increases in the New York State Retirement estimate.

On this past Wednesday (March 30) 54 students of Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead were inducted into the Sister Mary Euphrasia Chapter of the National Honor Society.

State Legislature Passes Budget

As a result of the budget proposal by Governor Cuomo and now passed by the NY State Legislature, Suffolk County School Districts will receive over $136 million dollars less in state aid than last year. The Riverhead School District will receive $2,360,341 less in aid or 12.9% less than previous years.

Paper Bags - a Turnabout

It appears that paper bags for leaf pickup are now going to be available after all. The Highway Department is now saying (according to the News Review) that there has been a change to the situation wherein paper bags for those pesky leaves were, at first, not being purchased and can now be picked up by residents at the Highway Department. (Only on Friday between 10 am and 2 pm).

Fill them with your leaves left over from last fall and place them out with your garbage on regular pickup days. No more than 10 bags per pickup. No plastic bags with leaves will be accepted.

Voting for the annual library budget will be held at the Public Library on Tuesday , April 5. If you make regular use of the library please take some time out to vote.

The voting in the special election in the Suffolk Legislative 6th District is a close one. Democrat Sarah Anker, a newcomer to politics, is currently leading Republican Martin Haley by just 224 votes.

Levy Out - A Surprise

Many were surprised when County Executive Steve Levy announced on Thursday that he would not seek reelection to the County post. This would have been his third term in the Suffolk supervisor's office.

There is major speculation that the inquiries into questionable campaign financing caused Levy to announce that he would not go for the seat again. The campaign funds calculated at about $4 million dollars was being turned over to Suffolk DA Spota to provide some relief from the frequent charges being made regarding the source for some of the money.

Spota says that he did not think Levy personally profited from the campaign fund.

School Budget Reviews Continue

Next week the School District will make a budget presentation at the Aquebogue School (3/29) and the following week the presentation will be at the Pulaski School (4/5). All at 7 pm on tuesdays.

No Pain at Bayport-Blue Point

179 residents in the Bayport-Blue Point School District signed petitions asking that all school administrators in the district be subject to a salary cap.

The school board unanimously rejected the petition. So much for the rights of property owners and tax payers. (How about a petition to throw out the school board?)

Highway Department Confirms - No Leaf Pickup

When we reported that the Highway and Sanitation Departments could not reconcile the spring leaf pickup program, we thought it would get resolved. Well, apparently it didn't and the Highway Department confirmed that it would not be providing paper leaf bags afterall but you could still carry your leaves to the yardwaste facility on Youngs. Sanitation pickup is ok if you have your own paper bags (no plastic allowed).

Levy Proposes Cap on Budget

County Executive Steve Levy has proposed a cap on the growth of the county budget at 2% or the rate of inflation whichever is lower.
Read Levy's proposal here. Other proposals are similar but cap the growth at 2% or higher.

New Sex Offender Plan
There is a new plan , not yet accepted, to replace the trailers located at the Suffolk County prison facility with four undisclosed locations in the County. The four locations would be kept secret which is not going over well in some quarters.

Paper Bags for Leaf Program-Not so Fast

Your calendar from the Sanitation Department shows a three week time frame whereby the Town will pick up those leaves left over from the fall. It was required that you used the Town supplied paper bags (plastic no longer accepted) obtained from the Highway Department. Problem is that the Highway Dept didn't know about it and apparently the Sanitation people did not purchae the needed paper bags. So the program is on hold until Highway and Sanitation can work it out.

SCCC Unveils Learning Center

Administrators of the Eastern Campus of Suffolk Community College have unveiled a new $14.5 million dollar Learning Center housed in a 40,000 square foot building. It will be called the Montaukette Learning Center.

No Raises for Town Workers
Riverhead Town workers have agreed to a new 4 year contract running until 2014. No wage increases will be given until the third and fourth years when they will receive a 1% and a 1.5% for the final two years.

New Eatery on Osborn

The Off-Main Market and Kitchen will occupy the building recently vacated by the Peconic Baking Company on Osborn (near the railroad station).

Library Budget Meeting

The Riverhead Public Library held a public meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 pm to present and review the library's budget for the coming year. The budget spells out an increase of 3.3 million dollars in spending . A public vote on the budget will be held at the Library on April 5 between 10 am and 8 pm.

School District Budget Meeting Also

The Riverhead Central School District was scheduled to meet on Tuesday evening at the Middle School to present the District's budget for the coming year. The meeting was at 7 pm. There will be additional budget presentations at various local schools on a weekly basis until the public vote on May 17.

Levy Holding Off OTB Bankruptcy.

County Executive Steve Levy is holding off any legislative resolution which would allow the Suffolk Off Track Betting corporation to file for bankruptcy. Perhaps Levy has a solution which could forestall the financial failure of the OTB. The NYC OTB met a similar fate.

Wicks in for Zimbler

Associate Principal David Wicks has been named to temporarily assume the duties of Riverhead High School Principal replacing David Zimbler who has resigned to take a position in Westbury schools.

21st Century Buys PC Richards Vacant Building

21st Century Oncology Centers has agreed to purchase the vacant P.C. Richards building on Route 58 (near Burger King) and will establish a cancer treatment center at that location. Peconic Bay Medical Center will lease space in the building.

New Football Coach at Mercy
Jeff Doroski has been named the new football coach at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School. The new coach is a graduate of Mercy.

Sean Walter Delivers "State of the Town"

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter speaking before a group at the Calverton Links, delivered his State of the Town message and it was an optimistic one at that.

Walter cited achievement's in downtown planning and completed works. He spoke of the almost complete Hyatt down hotel adjacent to the Atlantis Aquarium, the new Dark Horse restaurant, work of the Business Improvement District, the Summerwind project and continuing work on the shuttered theater.

He also spoke of the future planning for EPCAL including the signing of a consulting contract with a firm assigned to help with intelligent plans for the 2900 acre parcel.

Densieski Says EPCAL Needs Recreation

Former Town Board member Ed Densieski says that the Town should include recreation as one of it's priorities in planning for EPCAL. The Town recently let a contract for EPCAL planning to an outside firm.

Building Inspections - Outside Company

The Town is expected to come to an agreement with an outside firm to conduct building inspections on the big box stores which prevail on route 58. The recent budget cut 13 employees from the Town payroll including the Building Department.

Pharmacy and Bank on Edwards

The owners of a 3 acre-plus parcel on Edwards Avenue (opposite FedEx) are proposing the building of a 13,800 square foot pharmacy and a 4,000 square foot bank on the site, The now closed Village Crossroads restaurant would remain and share parking with the commercial buildings. Previous proposals did not meet the zoning restrictions for the area.

"Millionaire Tax" Ending

Fredric Dicker of the NY Post is reporting that the so called Millionaire's tax for people making over $200,000 is coming to an end. The tax expires on December 31 and will not be renewed according to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Zeldin Rally to Stop Salt Water Fee

State Senator Lee Zeldin will be holding a rally and conference at the Suffolk County Boat Show in Brentwood on Saturday, February 23 and will gather signatures for an initiative to remove the Salt Water Fishing License Fee now being charged to Suffolk County Residents. The rally will be at 1 pm.

School Board Puts Bond Back on the Agenda

Last year the residents of Riverhead voted down the $123 million dollar bond issue requested by the school board. The board has suggested that it has not given up on the bond and will probably reintroduce a similar bond referendum next year. This despite the fact that residents in many states across the country can no longer handle the school taxes or school budgets without some relief from the unions. Riverhead has already indicated that a school tax increase is on the way. Albany has already made it known that it intends to seriously reduce the amount of school aid for all districts.

High School Principal Moving On

Riverhead High School Principal David Zimbler will leave his post and take a new position in Nassau County's Westbury School District. Zimbler will probably leave at the end of April.

Propane Buses for Riverhead

The transportation director for Riverhead schools unveiled two new propane driven school buses into a system of more than 106 vehicles. The new transports, called Blue Bird, are expected to save fuel costs and are, of course, free of objectionable emissions.

New Budget- Hard Times For Some.

The new school budget for Riverhead is likely to reflect the huge loss of aid that usually comes from Albany. Now even though the budget will require a tax levy of around 5.8% , the district is projecting a loss of some 40 employees now with the school system. The 40 include 15 teachers and 4 administrators.

The lesson of the confrontation in Wisconsin is not lost on some of the residents in the district. There are some who are suggesting the need to make deeper cuts than proposed.

The proposal to provide shelters around the county for sex offenders has been defeated by County Executive Steve Levy. There had been only a single bidder to the idea,

Library Budget Going Up Too!

Riverhead Library Director Lisa Jacobs has published the Library Budget for 2011-2012 and if it passes, will result in a 7.95% increase in a tax levy for the citizens of the Riverhead library district.

The increases are primarily from personnel costs including a 44% increase in retirement payments, double digit changes in health care insurance and some salary increases.

A budget information meeting will be held at 7 pm on March 8 in the library. Public voting on the library budget will be held on April 5, 10 am to 8 pm.

School Budget Tax Increase

While the school budget presented by Superintendent Nancy Carney shows a spending increase of approximately 3.28% or $3 million dollars, the tax levy, based on Carney's budget, will actually be 5.7% or $5.2 million dollars. These figures are likely to change when Governor Cuomo's NY State budget is finalized.

School Superintendent Proposes
$111.8 Million Dollar Spending Plan

Riverhead School Superintendent Nancy Carney unveiled her proposed spending plan for the coming school year. It calculates to a 3.28 % or $3 million dollar increase in spending for the 2011-2012 budget.

The spending plan includes a number of cuts but were not specified. The bulk of the spending comes from funding retirement pensions and cost of living increases. Utilizing the spending framework presented by the Superintendent, the School Board will now have to prepare a budget to be presented for approval by the public in early May 2011.

The spending proposal is only part of the story of course. All school districts are now awaiting a final budget determination by the Governor wherein he may cut $2.9 million dollars in aid to the Riverhead School District in order to close the gap on a 10 billion dollar statewide deficit.

A team of Long Island State Senators has vowed to fight the Governor on his budget cuts although Cuomo has received a lot of support even across party lines.

This school board must know that the public is reaching the breaking point when it comes to taxes and with 60 to 65% of the annual tax bill going to the school district there is likely to be strong resistance for an excessive tax rate.

Prediction here: The budget won't pass the first time round.

Cuomo Trying to Close Gap

Gov Cuomo is taking a lot of flak in his attempt to close an estimated 10 billion dollar budget and he is taking a first shot at the school budgets.

The Guv will slash 1.9 billion from schools statewide which is getting a lot of outrage from the school districts.

Riverhead for example, was expecting a cut in Albany funding but not the 16% or 2.9 million dollars that Cuomo's budget dictates. The Riverhead Board had been working on a 3% budget increase before the major cuts were announced from Albany. They will now have to recalculate their numbers and dig a little deeper to prevent a major tax increase.

LI Senators Vow to Fight Cuomo
The nine state Senators from Long Island have vowed to stop the Cuomo budget and the devastating cuts it will bring to the Long Island Districts.

Board Signs EPCAL Study

The Riverhead Town Board has approved signing of a contract with a consulting firm who will study the highest and best use of the former Grumman property. The vote was 4 - 1 with John Dunleavy saying no to the proposal.

The proposal to spend $450,000 on the study is not without it's critics. Many feel that a previous study is still current and suitable as a guideline for future development, (and the study didn't cost anything). It is strongly felt that this is not a good time to spend taxpayer's money on something that could be handled with good old fashioned common sense and intelligent planning.

New Storm Warnings for The Island

Snow Removal Budget Not Exceeded ..Yet

Town Highway Supervisor Gio Goodson says that his department still has some funds left in the snow removal part of the Town budget and may be good for another few storms. (Ed note: snow removal and street plowing seems to be better this year than last but why do they always have to plow the snow into your driveway after you worked so hard to clear it out?)

Things I Don't Understand (there are so many)

Why is Supervisor Sean Walter so determined to tear down the Second Street Firehouse to make way for more parking for a downtown movie theater that hasn't been built yet. Shouldn't new planning for EPCAL include a multiplex theater similar to Island 16? Who wants to go downtown to see a movie anyway? What about the theater renovation on Main Street thats been going on for years now?

Don't Understand Part 2
The Town is about to sign a consulting contract for somewhere close to a half million dollars to develop a visionary plan for EPCAL. We still have a plan (that is not outdated). We have capable people on the Board and in our Planning Department. (I do not attribute this same capability to the Planning Board however.) Applying simple common sense to the problem and normal marketing techniques should permit development of this great asset for the benefit of the Township and it's residents.

Major Snow Clobbers Riverhead Again

The Baiting Hollow area received between 15 and 20inches of snow over the past two days. Official measurements were not available at print time, but local calculations put the number at well over a foot and a half. The snow was deep and heavy for shoveling. Those lucky to have snow blowers saved a lot of linament. Snow blowers were not to be found anywhere even if you had ready cash for a purchase.

Many offices, businesses and of course the schools were all closed because of the storm. This was particularly problematical for the schools as many tests including midterms and regents were scheduled for this week.

Town To Announce EPCAL Study

Riverhead has decided to seek some professional consulting help to sort out the planning and vision for EPCAL. The recent disappointing loss of two contracts for development at the site has brought into focus the immediate need for some worthwhile projects which would benefit the taxpayers of the Town.

SWR Recruiting for Superintendent.

The Shoreham-Wading River School District has decided to engage the services of a recruiting firm to search out potential candidates for the position of School Superintendent. The present Superintendent Dr Harriet Copel will leave her post at the end of June 2011.

Firehouse for Land at Stotsky? No Way
Coucilwoman Jodi Giglio denied that the Town was seeking to swap land near the Stotsky Park on Pulaski for the 2nd Street Firehouse but did confirm that the Town is in contract to acquire the former firehouse building.

Social Security Out of Money in 2037
Testifying before a Senate committee, Dr Elmendorf who heads up the CBO, (Congressional Budget Office) estimates that the Social Security Trust Fund will be out of money to pay out monthly entitlements by the year 2037. He further states that the Social Security Disability Fund will depleted in just ten years.

State Workers May Face Layoff

Andrew Cuomo's budget for New York State attempts to close a huge gap in the State's deficit. Spending cuts may include the layoff of 10 to 15,000 State workers from all levels of the state government. The Governor is reviewing the budget proposals with leaders of the Assembly and Senate.

Demolish Second Street Firehouse?

Supervisor Sean Walter is trying to advance his plan of purchasing the Second Street firehouse, demolish the building and turn the property into a parking lot for downtown businesses and for a proposed downtown theater. Once the huge firehouse was built and occupied on Roanoke Avenue the smaller firehouse on Second was no longer needed.

Some have suggested that the vacant firehouse could be occupied by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance now housed in quarters on Osborn (opposite Agway). Others suggest that the Riverhead Police could move into the building. Not everyone is in agreement that the brick building should be torn down and feel that it could be put to better use than as a parking lot.

Permit Issued for Summerwind

The downtown apartment complex Summerwind jumped a huge hurdle this week when it was issued a building permit. The project will consist of 32 upper level apartments and commercial space on the main level. Issuance of the permit will now enable demolition of adjoining structures and major bank financing as well. Town Council-woman Jodi Giglio is a partner in the project.

The So-Called Medicare Tax
is a complicated issue. High income earners or those who have capital gains above a threshold amount of $250,000 (individual) or $500,000 for a couple may be subject to a new 3.8% Medicare tax on the amount above the threshold. Snope.com has a good explanation of this. The tax is on properties or investment income earned after January 2013.

3-5 Inches of New Snow Falls on Riverhead.

Once again the forecasters were right on the money with their prediction of 3 to 5 inches of snow in the Riverhead-Calverton area starting in the small hours of Friday. The snow was light ending at about 10 am Friday morning, but it was enough to cause some school delays in the Riverhead area. The Charter school and McGann-Mercy had delayed starts of two hours.

Shoreham-Wading River Facing Hefty Proposition

Removal and replacement of oil storage tanks in the SWR school district is expected to run about $825,000. A proposition for residents approval will be presented in May of this year. Approval, they say, will not have any tax consequences. An additional $66,000 will be required for drainage system improvements.

Sarah Palin to Address LIA

The Long Island Association has announced that former Governor of Alaska and VP candidate Sarah Palin has accepted an invitation to speak before the LIA membership at a meeting on February 17 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Bogus $100 Hundred Dollar Bills

Two men are being sought as suspects in passing counterfeit one hundred dollar bills at the Wal-Mart in Riverhead. The suspects images were caught by a security camera and the photos have been distributed by police.

Flanders Project Over

The Suffolk County legislature quietly put an end to a much anticipated major project in Flanders when they (the legislature) agreed to purchase 20 acres of land along the Peconic for $3.5 million dollars. Planners in Flanders had worked on the project for more than ten years before it was ended.

International Hockey at the Coliseum

The Long Island Coliseum has played host to an International Hockey Tournament in the past few years and will once again sponsor the same competition this coming weekend. Selected Junior hockey players from all over the Island will play against teams from Europe and Asia. Last year the team representing Suffolk playing out of The Rinx in Hauppauge won the finals.

Meanwhile all star hockey players from Suffolk County High Schools met in a matchup at The Rinx on Sunday evening. There are some very fine players in that league.

Walter Wants High Tech at EPCAL
When Sen Schumer announced plans for a new high tech initiative for Long Island Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter made an immediate pitch to have the biotech and energy development facility located in the under developed Enterprise Park. Walter's announcement advised how the town was "through with ski lifts" and other planning that hasn't worked out.

School Board Meets to Decide Assistant Supe's Fate
The Riverhead School Board will meet this evening and among other issues will have to determine the status of Michael Ivanov, Assistant Superintendent for Finance. Mr Ivanov had been dismissed from his position but not terminated.

Reps Want More Security
In view of the attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, many representatives of congress are understandably, demanding increased security. OK...why not call for additional security whenever you schedule a public event. Pay for it by reducing your offices by at least one location. Ironically Giffords was about to recommend that all congressman reduce their office spending by 5%.

Snow in Forecast..but how much?

Weather forecasters seem to disagree on just how much snow will fall between tomorrow (Fri) and Saturday. The snow which is expected to start falling in the early morn of Friday could be as little as an inch or as much as 7 inches according to some reports. Buy the bread and milk anyway and don't forget the gas for the snow blower.

Football Coach Steps Down

Joe Read, football coach for McGann-Mercy, has stepped down from that position. The team had a losing record for the 2010 season. In four years as coach the team had a 10-23 record. It isn't known if this played into Coach Read's decision to leave the Mercy team.

New Mall in Wading River

A new shopping mall is being planned for Wading River on a parcel just east of the CVS on 25A. There are reports that some eleven stores will be located on the site with more information later.

Riverhead Schools New Bond Issue?

It seems like yesterday that the public voted down a $123 million dollar bond issue for renovating classrooms, constructing others and moving administrative personnel into more permanent quarters. Well, a new bond issue is being drafted and will possibly be ready for a fall vote, No word on how much the bond will be or the date of the voting, but its coming.

New Gov and Strong Promises

Newly sworn in Governor Andrew Cuomo is getting off to a promising start with fiscal conservatives. Faced with a whopping 9.3 billion dollar deficit Cuomo announced his intentions to freeze the pay of 130,000 State workers, declare no increase in State taxes, put a cap on spending and limit school property taxes to a 2% cap. Lets hope he can deliver. Regardless of political party the public should be for his plan.

Move Over Law

The new year has brought many new laws. One of them is the "Move Over" law which requires that you move your vehicle to the left or middle lane when you see flashing lights up ahead. The law is designed for the safety of police or emergency personnel who may be working at the scene.

Many states have had similar laws on the books for some time.

Erosion...Needs to be Reviewed

Ed Romaine, Suffolk County legislator, is concerned that several towns on the East End may have suffered extensive damage from erosion due to stormy conditions over the past few months. Romaine will meet with environmental officials to discuss solutions to the problem.

Koz to be Official

Robert Kozakiewicz will be named to the position of Town Attorney at the Town Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday 1/4. The Board is also expected to name a Deputy Town Attorney as well.

New Town Attorney

Its Official! Robert Kozakiewicz former Town Supervisor, local attorney and most recently; a deputy town attorney will officially be named Town Attorney. Dawn Thomas, present Town Attorney will leave that post to law clerk for a Suffolk Supreme Court Judge.

Kozakiewicz will be paid $106,500 a year plus 100% of health coverage. He had been earning $44,000 as a part time attorney for the town plus 75% of his health care coverage.

Town Settles for $1.2 Million

The suit filed by the Town of Riverhead against a local engineering firm has been settled for $1.2 million dollars. The suit filed by the town was with regard to unanticipated cost overruns relating to reclamation of the town landfill on Youngs Avenue.

The engineering firm had claimed that the town owed them $80,000 for work performed on behalf of the town. They have now been paid $37,000.

Trouble in the Legislature

The departure of Dan Losquadro from the Suffolk County legislature to the NY State Assembly has brought about some challenges to the Minority Leader position in the legislature. John Kennedy (R) Nesconset wants the job but conservative action groups are strongly opposing him and anyone supporting him. The 9-12 Project of Suffolk thinks he is far too liberal. Stay tuned.

LIRR Rate Hikes- Bad Timing

The LIRR increased ticket prices on riders by 7.5% today and the riders are very unhappy. Means about $19 a month on a commutation ticket and takes the monthly tab up to about $299 for many commuters.

Town Budget Eliminates 13 Positions.
Supervisor Walter never backed off the cutting of full and part time positions in the 2011 Town budget. The financial plan still calls for a 3.7% tax increase for the residents.

Deer Hunting at EPCAL

The Riverhead Town Board has approved deer hunting in the wooded areas of the Enterprise Zone (EPCAL). Hunters will have to compete with others for the limited hunting permits (3 per day in a 100 acre sector). Eight sectors will be included in the hunting area.

Hunting will be allowed for just about one month (January 3 to January 31). Contact Town Hall for date of the lottery drawing if you are interested.

The Hyatt Hotel at the Atlantis Marine World on Main Street is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy in the middle of next summer

Tradeski By Just Two Votes

A very close race for Riverhead Fire Commissioner on December 14 gave the win to John Tradeski with a margin of just two votes over Jim Carey. Carey lost when a final review of contested ballots brought him up close to Tradeski. Eight of the contested ballots were dismissed because the voters were from out of the Fire District and not eligible.

Water Main Break on Main Street

There has been a water main break on East Main Street in Riverhead in the general vicinity of Atlantis Marine World. Police have shut down the roadway between Uinion and Ostarnder.

Grangebel Park Open

A formal opening of Grangebel Park in downtown Riverhead is expected in January but for now, the barriers and fences have been removed and residents have full access to the walkways and waterways in the park.

Giglio Not Taking Deferred Payment

The deferred compensation of $4750 owed to Coucilwoman Jodi Giglio will not be taken by the Board member. She is responding to calls for Board members to take a reduction in their salaries as other Town workers are asked to do the same. George Gabrielsen will turn back 5% of his salary as a Town councilman as a response to the same request. Other members have not been heard from as yet.

Snow In Our Future?

Meteorologists are predicting a possibility of snow on the East End for the last few days of this week and possibly into Christmas. Nothing firm as yet but there is a definite possibility that the white stuff will make an appearance.

Towns Win Law Suit Against State

Seven Long Island Townships won a law suit against NY State regarding a requirement for residents to purchase $10 dollar salt water fishing licenses to fish in town waterways. The state claimed it was using the license requirement to obtain data. The seven towns included in the lawsuit were East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island, Brookhaven, Southold, Huntington and Oyster Bay. Riverhead was not a party to the suit and it was not known whether other towns with salt waterways would be included in the determination.

Levy Offers County Land for Flood Victims

County Executive Steve Levy has proposed a plan to build homes for those Horton Avenue families who were flooded out in the heavy rains this year. He has suggested that county owned lands could be used to build five (5) homes. Further assistance was needed from Long Island Builders and charity groups to provide funding and low interest mortgage financing.

The Duck on Flanders Road will be getting Christmas decorations and lighting on Thursday.

Shinnecock Tribe has an appointment to talk with Obama in the near future.

Virginia Federal Judge Declares Obama Healthcare Unconstitutional (read here)

Federal Judge Henry Hudson did not declare the entire law unconstitutional but some of the major components including mandates which require citizens to purchase health insurance. The requirement of mandating insurance purchase does not go into effect until 2014 so the decision is not likely to change anything in the law right now.

The Obama Administration is likely to appeal the decision. Meanwhile, at least 20 other states have filed suits against the healthcare bill. Rick Scott, Governor elect of Florida is very vocal about the issue. As a former CEO of a healthcare provider he has indicated that he would fight on against Obamacare even if the Virgina Judge's decision had gone the other way.

***Breaking***: Final Vote By Senate to Extend Bush Tax Rates Passes 81-19,

Also extends unemployment benefits for 13 months and reinstates Estate Tax (35% with $5 million dollar individual exemption or $10 million for a couple).

Vote was 81-19. DeMint, Coburn, Sanders and Gillibrand among those who voted NO. Sent on to the House which may take up the issue immediately.

Town Attorney Leaves

Riverhead Town Attorney Dawn Thomas will leave her position in the Town to become a Clerk in the Suffolk Supreme Court. Robert Kozakiewicz, a current deputy town attorney and former town supervisor has been named as the new Town Attorney. Thomas expects that Kozakiewicz will be supported in that nomination.

Tim Bishop Returns to DC

Congressman Tim Bishop (D) said that he was surprised when Randy Altschuler (R) conceded his election bid to unseat Bishop for the CD-1 congressional seat but it appeared that Altschuler would not be able to overcome Bishop's lead in the balloting. Bishop left Washington as a member of the majority party in the House and now returns to a minority role.

Copel Will Not Return

Dr. Harriet Copel, Superintendent of the Shoreham-Wading River School District will leave that position at the end of her current contract which ends in July 2011. The SWR School Board will commence a search for a replacement. Copel, often at odds with conservative critics and a local newspaper for her spending practices, will pursue other things.

Leaf Program Still On

The Riverhead program to pickup leaves will continue through December 31. Sanitation vehicles will pickup on their regular schedule.

Residents may use plastic or biodegradable bags available at the Highway Department on Osborn Avenue (near Agway).
