Reclamation Project Seriously Underestimated
Supervisor Cardinale admitted in a talk show interview on Riverhead station WRIV that the extent of the Landfill Reclamation Project had been seriously underestimated perhaps to the tune of $25 million dollars. It is not clear how the Town will makeup the huge shortfall. Cardinale suggested that some of it would be made up through the sale of development rights at the site. Does this mean that the Town will have to turn over the site (after completion of the reclamation) to developers for residential or commercial use in order to recoup some of that money?.
The Supervisor has stated that the dilemma is causing a serious distraction to the Board and was the reason that the asphalt/landfill agenda item was tabled at the recent Riley Avenue School Town Board meeting. Approximately 1.1 million cubic yards of material has been removed or processed at the site with another 700-800 thousand cubic yards yet to go.
Reassessment Still On the Calendar
The reassessment of all Town properties is still being considered and it is estimated that it will cost about $1.6 million to complete and take about 3 years before results could be finalized and adjusted taxes implemented.
Cheap Shot from Suffolk Life
The Suffolk Life editorial critical of the Calverton Civic Association for standing up and voicing opposition to various proposals in the Town is not worthy of that publication. Suggesting that the organization doesn't appreciate the "larger picture" of how these proposals effect the region or the County loses sight of the purpose of that Association and all similar groups to inform, protect and give voice to the public whether for or against a proposal. No objection is "silly" and local residents should have a right to their opinion in all matters concerning their quality of life.
Hats Off To Carol Carbone
The supermarket weekly "The Community Journal" is mostly geared to news of Wading River but it is worth picking up and reading if only for the SWR (Shoreham-Wading River) school district column written by Carol Carbone. She gives a detailed report each week of the District"s school board proceedings and pulls no punches. Its like having an unpaid watchdog reviewing your Board. She has ruffled some feathers this week and I hope she is not discouraged.
