You may recall (just a few months ago) that the proposed cutting through of the Preserve cul-de-sac was apparently eliminated from the Mastronardi subdivision plan. This was accomplished through public outcry against the cut-through, by residents of the Preserve who spoke before the Planning Board and submittal of a strong petition emphasizing our outrage.
Well the cut-through is back. We have received word that several members of the Board are now thinking that the cut-through is a good idea and would like to make the present cul-de-sac a direct access into the new subdivision. We have even heard that there is a proposal to make this access the only access!!!!
The Board must not be allowed to do this. That plan is so ridiculous that it must be stopped in it's tracks before it gets any further. We have prepared a petition for signature by residents of the Preserve and neighboring areas. Please sign it and if you can, attend the Planning Board session on Thursday evening!!
(While the Mastronardi subdivision appears on the Thursday, April 6 agenda, Young and Young (Mastronardi representative) doesn't believe it will be discussed until next week sometime. We will be there regardless and will attempt to speak if the agenda item is announced.
School Budget About to Drop the Other Shoe
The Riverhead school budget is about to land with a giant thud. Can you say 7.5% increase. Not only are we facing the usual inexplicable increases but now must somehow handle the shortfall from the severe reduction in Federal aide to support Federally mandated programs such as IDEA and "No child left behind". The First Congressional District is down about $33 million dollars in Fed funds and the mandated program costs are to be absorbed by the local school districts. The Riverhead CSD share is huge.
Binder Answers Back
Art Binder's Letter to the Editor (Suffolk Life April 5) was an appropriate response to Willmott's criticism of the Greater Calverton Civic Association opposition to the F1 Go-Kart proposal. He let 'em have it. Lets all speak out!
