September Brings Hurricanes and Decisions

Densieski Resolution Fails to Convince Board. - Town Board member Ed Densieski, who has steadfastly opposed housing at EPCAL, attempted to pass a resolution which would eliminate home construction at the former Calverton site. No other Board member would agree to second the motion however and it would appear that the public will have to voice it's opinion to decide the issue.

Town Board Proposes Zoning Change Hearing for EPCAL - The Board has proposed a change to Chapter 108 of the Zoning Codes with regard to a Planned Recreational Park District at EPCAL, the former Calverton Naval site. The district is comprised of approximately 1600 acres and, if approved, would pave the way for a hotel and conference center, golf courses, (18 hole and par 3 executive courses), senior housing units and development of single family homes at the rate of one (1) dwelling per acre. This seems to describe the Pulte proposal for which that organization is reported to have offered some 90 million dollars to the Town. Proponents want the Town to take the deal, fearful that the landfill debacle will cost taxpayers a huge increase in their tax bills in the near future. Opponents want the Town to hold out for a total commercial/industrial concept to ensure long term revenues. The Town Board hearing on this change in zoning will be September 19, 2006, at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall.

F1 Go-Kart is trying to convince the Zoning Board that having restaurant and retail facilities is just a normal part of the Go-Kart business. Meanwhile there are reports of noise complaints from the area surrounding their Boston facility. We are not able to confirm the reports.

Yard Waste Site Cleanup - Wonder why this happened so quickly? Those of us who do a daily driveby of the Yard Waste facility on Youngs avenue began to wonder how much more grass and branches the place could handle when suddenly the facility was cleaned up seemingly overnight. Resolution #765 authorized American Site Restoration (one of 3 bidders) to perform emergency work at the yard.

Crown Sanitation Bond Not Released - The Town Board tabled the resolution which would have released a performance bond back to Crown Sanitation and ordered an inspection of the facility by the Planning Director.

Town Advertises for Bidders to Complete Landfill - The Town has initiated a series of ads requesting bids from any organization which would complete the landfill reclamation project in exchange for renumeration and TDRs (transfer of development rights).
