Maryann and Bob Kern announced this week that they would end their great newsletter for seniors (S.A.D.). S.A.D. has been a great advocate for the senior population on Long Island and have gotten a lot of attention from politicos in Washington and Albany.
The Kerns revealed that less than 2% of seniors actually signed petitions or signed up to fight for key issues. Just recently the State Senate rejected a bill to continue the property tax rebate for seniors, the measure only losing by 2 votes. Brian Foley (D-Brookhaven) cast the deciding vote which killed the measure. To their credit Ken Lavalle (R-1st SD) and Marc Alessi (D-1st AD) voted for the bill.
S.A.D. will also end it's website on December 31, 2009 and will bring to a close their great fight on behalf of Long Island's seniors. We thank them and wish them well.
Nassau Vote Comes to an End

NY Senate Rejects Gay Marriage.
The NY State Senate has voted down a measure to legalize same sex marriages in the State of New York. The vote was 38 to 24. All of the Republicans voted to reject the measure with some Democrats joining them.

Lee Zeldin (R-Brookhaven) will formally announce his candidacy for the State Senate this week. He will oppose Brian Foley in the November election. Zeldin previously ran against Tim Bishop for the 1st District Congressional seat in 2008.
