Congratulations to the members of the Bishop-McGann High School Senior Class of 2012 who were graduated last week. Bishop Murphy spoke to the students and congratulated them on completing four years at the Diocesan school in Riverhead.
The graduating class numbered more than 100 students almost all of whom were moving on to college. A few students were entering the military.
Melissa Wilson was named Valedictorian and also spoke before the assembly.
Late Blight
Agriculturists have discovered the presence of a fast traveling plant disease called Late Blight. It particularly attacks tomato and potato plants turning the leaves a greenish-gray, eventually killing the plant.
It may travel quickly onto other plants infesting a whole crop. Fungicide is the only known treatment but the disease must be caught early before it spreads. There were several cases of Late Blight found on the island last year and were quickly checked.
This is the same disease that caused the potato famine in Ireland many years ago.
