Next month the FAA will impose new flight rules for helicopters transiting the Island. Flights on the North Shore will have to maintain a minimum flight level of 2500 feet and operate at least one mile off shore. Naturally operators are unhappy about this but homeowners living in the communities along the north shore are extremely pleased.
New Gas Pipeline
LIPA is proposing a new pipeline under the Sound originating in Milford CT and terminating at Shoreham near the defunct nuclear power site. The gas pipeline is specifically designated to supply fuel for a new J-Power plant at the Shoreham site.
We have no particular objection to the pipeline but if LIPA is going to spend all that money to run a new pipe under the Sound then why can't Long Island residents also have natural gas piped into their neighborhoods instead of being captives to the oil business?
EPCAL Needs Help
The FAA will soon select a site where it can construct a new facility to house the consolidated operations of TRACOM in Westbury and the Air Traffic Center at Islip Airport. There is a distinct possibility that the new site may be off the Island, either upstate (at Stewart) or out of state (in Jersey). This could mean a loss of over 900 jobs to the Island.
I have suggested to the Supervisor that a serious bid should be made to the FAA to relocate the two FAA air centers to 50 acres at EPCAL. A perfect location. We have the space and the current employees can remain on the Island.
Think its a good idea? Let the Board know and soon!
