The Zoning Board of Appeals has reopened the hearing for a cat neutering center and shelter planned for 165 Youngs Avenue. The ZBA had previously announced that it would render a decision at their regularly scheduled meeting on December 20 but instead decided to adjourn for more hearings on January 24, 2013.
The vote to adjourn by the Board was unanimous. Residents from the Preserve and surrounding properties had sent numerous letters and petitions to the Board appealing for a rehearing of the application and were pleased with the results. Some 25-30 residents attended the Thursday evening meeting and were represented by counsel.
North Fork League Takes Over Animal Shelter
Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter has announced that the North Fork Animal Welfare League will take over the operation of the town's animal shelter on Youngs Avenue. Work has already begun on the shelter with stone retaining walls being installed.
North Fork will formally take over the shelter operation on March 1, 2013. It was unclear why the League would continue to apply for a cat treatment center (see above) at the opposite end of Youngs Avenue when it could simply perform that function in the existing shelter.
