Once again the Town Board is discussing the transfer of police headquarters from Howell in downtown to the acquired armory on route 58. The plan makes sense. Move the existing police offices from the present location adjacent to Town Hall to the spacious quarters afforded by the armory on Route 58. The Riverhead Court would move to the armory as well. This would free up the police building for expansion of the Town Hall into the police building and perhaps even bring some of the satellite offices back into Town Hall.
Only problem is money. Town is looking at a $87,000 bill just for designing the necessary renovations with construction costs not yet figured. Probably a million or more. Some debt will have to be retired first. So probably looking at 2015 as the earliest before this proposal can be looked at seriously.
The vacant firehouse on Second has brought a number of offers for takeover. None of them very clear. The Town (Walter) seems to want to hold on to part of the building as well as some of the parking available at the rear of the building. Someone better come up with a more solid vision for the future of this structure and soon.
Movie Downtown? Not Likely
Town Supervisor Sean Walter seems to be giving up on his hopes for a downtown movie theater. No real offers have come in and the potential buildings that he felt would work for the proposal are no longer available. The push seems to be for a theater on 58 if any at all. The mystery to me is that no one pursued the concept of a multiplex theater in EPCAL. Plenty of parking and would be inviting to patrons from many areas, east, west and south of Riverhead. But no one asked me!
