The DEC has apparently given it's approval for the removal of the remaining sand at the landfill Reclamation project to a company in Queens (Evergreen). The sand removal essentially means that GL Paving will not get to process the sand through the asphalt plant. Lyons, owner/operator of the plant has contemplated litigation in the matter and the Town Supervisor suggested that the Town was prepared for it. Oh yes - Mr Lyons characterization of the asphalt plant spewing as "sweet stench" means that he has never sat in one of the backyards downwind of his project.
No mention has been made, however, of the underestimated cost of the project resulting from an apparent miscalculation of the sand volume. The additional cost could be as much as $25 million. At the moment, this situation is being played out in a very low key manner. Now if this story is correct (Cardinale admitted to it on WRIV last week) the Town may have few alternatives to completion of the project. One alternative, of course, is to cap the project which would be bad news. Capping is often invoked by municipalities to cover a landfill leaving it's future environmental impact much in doubt. Another alternative would be to extend the life of the Reclamation project thereby reducing the annual impact on taxpayers. Need a happy ending
Reassessment Looms but Uncertainty Exists
The Riverhead Town Board is still reviewing the pros and cons of a reassessment of the 15,000 some odd properties within the township. Attorney, Scott DeSimone, a recognized expert in property reevaluation has estimated that the project could cost the Town upwards of $2 million dollars to complete with the results available in 2010. The Town Assessor, Laverne Tennenberg, is enthusiastically for the proposal while others on the Board seem unconvinced.
F1 Go-Kart Track Study
An environmental study of the F1 Go-Kart track proposal has been completed. There is lots of controversy about this project and many unhappy campers in the vicinity of Edwards Avenue. The study is at Town Hall. Personally, we believe this project belongs somewhere else and we urge the Board to reject it.

Thank you for posting this information. I also want to let residents know that I am attending the meetings this week, due to a rumor that they are changing the drawings again for the new developement next to us. As I heard, the new proposal will have The Preserve as the sole entrance for the new developement.
