Nancy reports that the tap street proposed in conjunction with the Mastronardi subdivision is still on the drawing board, (according to Howard Young of Young & Young.) The subdivision will be included on a future Planning Board agenda and we will be watching for it. Stay with us on this one. Too much at stake!
Town Prepares Capping Standards
It is becoming apparent that the Town is moving in the direction of capping the landfill. Specific standards for the capping have been prepared in order that interested parties may prepare their bids for the project. There are still 3 or 4 contractors who want to discuss bidding on continuation of the reclamation process. The benefits vary from reclaiming and selling the sand to making an exchange for development rights (the new gold).
Supervisor Cardinale: "Hold Budget Below 6%"
More will be known about the budget after the Monday, 11/20 Town Board meeting, during which the Board is expected to finalize the figures. The Supervisor states that he is trying hard to keep the increase below 6%.
It isn't known whether the much talked about raises for the Board members will be included in the budget. This has become a very sensitive topic of conversation around the Town. The Supervisor is against the raises unless they can be justified by similar incoming revenues or cuts in spending. Cardinale has indicated that he will not accept the proposed increase for his position even if approved by the Board.
Calverton Runway Dispute May Not Be Over
The suit brought by Mark Houraney against the Town of Riverhead regarding use of the runway at Calverton was dismissed. The Town is considering an attempt to recover legal fees associated with the court case. The News-Review, in this week's issue, has reported on the trial and, in addition, Denise Civiletti, Associate Publisher, has written an in depth article about the events which surrounded this saga.
This is a remarkable story about how some errors in judgment were compounded by questionable decisions and poor administrative work. This could have cost the taxpayers a small fortune and made the landfill cost seem like petty cash. It will shake your confidence in government. Take a few minutes to read it.
