County Exec Authorizes Purchase of Local Development Rights

County Executive Steve Levy has authorized the purchase of development rights to 118 acres of Riverhead farmland. Included in the purchase is the 27 acre Farr property on Youngs Avenue, an organic farm which was purchased for $2.43 million dollars.

The purchase virtually assures residents of the Preserve that no subdivisions or minor housing developments will encroach on the Preserve from the west side and that farm vistas will remain for the foreseeable future.

Other purchases include the 70 acre Zinicki cabbage farm that runs from Sound Avenue to Reeve Avenue. ($4.45 million from Suffolk and the balance or 30% from the Town of Riverhead). The third property is the 21 acre Reeve Crop Farm (Sound Avenue & Pier Avenue). Purchase price for development rights $1.8 million ($1.3 million from Suffolk, $569,700 from the Town.
