The Public Hearing to consider altitude limitations on helicopters flying over Suffolk was well attended. Scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening (Aug 19) the hearing drew about 130 observers to review the proposal by Legislator Ed Romaine. The resolution would mandate an altitude limit of 2500 feet for all Suffolk overflights by helicopter craft.
Over thirty (30) residents signed up to speak and were given 5 minutes to tell the legislators how they felt about chopper noise. The speakers were very informative, some with photos of helicopters over their houses, others with lists of actual times and frequencies of overflights.
There were some speakers who opposed the resolution and these were primarily helicopter operators, aerial photographers who usually specialize in real estate photos and one helicopter operator, who performs training, local air taxi or contract flying to survey power lines or boating incidents.
Legislator Romaine said he was taking all of these comments into consideration in order to prepare a finalized resolution for presentation to the body at a future session.
