East End residents packed the Shoreham-Wading River Middle School on Thursday evening to voice their opinion about the proposed Broadwater gas terminal planned for Long Island Sound. Not a single voice was heard in favor of the project. Supervisor Cardinale, who spoke at the forum strongly objected to the requirement for local municipalities to share in certain costs related to the project including security. Lets hear it from our Senators, Congressman and the Guv.
Cardinale Endorses Capping
The Riverhead Supervisor has now indicated that he is leaning strongly toward capping the landfill. He now says that it may possibly be accomplished at or under $10 million dollars. The Town must now prepare specs for bidding purposes and expects 6 or 7 bidders including Tully which recently proposed a $15 million tab for the project.
Anyone for Upgrading to First Class?
The Town Board has called for a public hearing to determine the interest in upgrading the current Town status from second class to first class. Changing to the upgraded designation would remove certain department head classifications from elected (such as the Assessor) to appointed. The proposed change would give the Supervisor greater authority and optionally assign council members to area districts instead of serving "at large". The proposal, if favorably received, will probably end up in a referendum. The hearing is scheduled for the regular Town Board meeting on January 17.
School District Schedules Expenditure Vote
The Riverhead Central School District has set the date for a public vote on a proposal to spend $6 million dollars on renovations, alterations and installations at various schools in the Riverhead school district. The funds are to be allocated from reserves. In addition, voters will be asked to approve an additional $4 million dollars (to be raised hereafter) for similar repairs. Voting machines will be open between 6 am and 9 pm on February 6th at the High School.
Board Publishes Employee Salaries
Click on to the Town web site (find the link in the right column), find Town Meetings and select January 3rd to see the entire salary schedule for all Town employees for 2007. This is public record stuff and I'm sure you will find it interesting or at least know where your tax dollars are going.
Ups and Downs
It would appear that Pulte Homes may be losing out on what was originally a promising offer for development of a portion of EPCAL. Even Supervisor Cardinale has lost his enthusiasm for the Pulte revised plan.....................The DEC has pulled the plug on Calverton Industries and revoked its operating permit. This situation is heading to the courthouse........................Newsday gave the Town a good writeup in the weekend edition and the planners should be happy but aren't there still too many vacancies on Main Street?..................The Rose Sanders appointment to the Zoning Board of Appeals and the dumping of 20 year ZBA member Martin Zeller still a topic of conversation...................Removed Calverton Civic Assoc web site link because of no activity. Sorry about that................but we added links to Rep. Peter King and to WRIV On Line.
