The Public Hearing on whether the Town should move ahead to a change from second class to first class status is certainly causing a lot of discussion in the Town. The change, acording to proponents of the measure would eliminate our three elected assessors and replace them with a single, appointed assessor. Board members who oppose the proposal fear this as strictly a political manuever, allowing the Supervisor to gain control of the assessor's office. Other changes would include the ability of the Town to set it's own limits on roadway speed limits. The additional change (optional) would assign Town Board Members to their own districts instead of "serving at large". Are there other advantages? Don't know.
Broadwater
Public Hearings on the Broadwater gas terminal (to be constructed on Long Island Sound) were held in Wading River-Shoreham this week and in Branford Connecticut (remember they are equally concerned about this issue). Despite the overwhelming opposition to this proposal on both sides of the Sound, the Federal Regulatory Agency can still decide on whether to give Broadwater the go ahead. Are you getting a sinking feeling already?
Tap Street
Nancy has done a litle investigating and found that the Mastronardi subdivision will not make the Planning Board agenda for a few months. Tap street is still on the plans so we must stay alert for the Public Hearing and any public notice in the local newspapers.
