Democrats Turn to Nominate a Fall Slate
When it came time for the Riverhead Democrat party to nominate their slate of candidates for the November elections they turned to familiar faces and selected Phil Cardinale as the Supervisor candidate and George Bartunek to repeat as a Town Councilman. A new face, Amy Csomy of Wading River, was selected to run for the Council seat being vacated by Ed Densieski and George Woodson will oppose Densieski for the Highway Commissioner slot.
Meanwhile, at the County level, the Republicans surprised everyone by endorsing current County Executive and Democrat, Steve Levy to repeat in the County Executive position. A cross endorsement is anticipated by the Republicans for one of their candidates, possibly Ed Romaine.
Huge Drug Bust in Riverhead.
A joint task force including the D.A. office, Suffolk Sheriff manpower and Riverhead Town police made 78 drug arrests in the Town. The task force organized by D.A. Tom Spota arrested more than 78 people while targeting street level drug sales and gang activity.
Gas Prices Continue Upward
Congessman Stupak has introduced a bill in Congress intended to reduce gasoline station price gouging relating to the current gas price spiral. "Supply and demanders", of course say that there "is no gouging". Right! Last year when the price of oil was around $70 a brl. gasoline prices were lower than today when oil is around $65 a brl.
Anyone think a weekly national boycott would do some good?
Yard Waste Grinding Offer in Question
A number of alert residents have jumped (negatively) on the proposal by Crown to grind the Town's yard waste on Youngs Avenue, and turn it into mulch, possibly for sale to residents. Offer was to grind the stuff free in exchange for an acre of Town property and the ability to sell the excess mulch to residents. The Town Board may review the proposal in a work session. By the way......lots of free mulch at the yard waste location right now.
This and that....Town seems to be looking for a downtown location to position a smaller grocery market like IGA. Also looking around for a new location for Town Hall.........Did we hear that White Castle is looking to come to Riverhead? Someone suggested the closed Krispy Kreme building on Rte 58........Our note last week regarding imported fish and other products......understand that the FDA will undertake to inspect a greater percentage of imported foods. How do you tell where these products originate?.......I don't know.... Guess you ask!..............
