Hearing helicopters overhead this neighborhood is hardly new to us. In fact you usually don't even look up when they pass by. If it is a military chopper you look up, give them a wave and a godspeed. It is actually exciting to see one and give them a salute. Wish we could do more.
It was unusual, however, to see a large, commercial helicopter hover overhead the acreage to the south of us and then cut engines and land. It hardly seemed proper for a copter this size ( a Sikorsky type) to operate so low and then land on this adjacent property. Operators got out, walked around and then took off again.
Riverhead Police showed little interest and thought it was ok for a landing nearby a residential area. We still don't know what it was all about but the registration number was N119RW.
Got Mulch? Stir it up.
If you have put some mulch around your house or in flower beds or around trees read the following from Mike McGroarty's garden letter.

Just a quick note on this Monday evening to remind you to send the kids out to stir up the mulch so it doesn't start producing fungus as the humidity increases.
Mulching your beds is really good for the plants, it keeps the weeds down and it keeps the soil cool and moist. It also provides some insulation during the winter. But mulch can also grow fungi, and some of those fungi can spray nasty stuff all over your house. That kind of fungi is called "Shotgun Fungus".
The easiest way to prevent the growth of fungi in your mulch is to keep the mulch loose so air circulates and moisture can pass through. This also helps your plants to breath and receive moisture and nutrients as needed.Just loosen the mulch with a soil grubber, cultivator or weeder to keep mulch fungi at bay.
County Legislature Rejects Romaine Proposal
A current County law restricts sex offenders from being housed closer than a quarter mile from the nearest public school, playground or park. Ed Romaine, our legislator discovered that the statute omitted Public Libraries and he quickly prepared an amendment to the law to include public libraries as a restricted area as well. You may be aware that Steve Levy, the County Executive has been in a war of words with Riverhead over the positioning of sex offender trailers at the County Jail and won't budge on appeals to change this.
In a straight party line vote the Democrat legislators (10) voted against including the Public Library with Republicans (8) voting for the amendment. And so, in a weird vote of solidarity with Levy the legislature has thumbed it's nose at Riverhead and every other Suffolk town that may have sex offenders living nearby their town's Public Library.
How sick are you of government at all levels?
Consumerisms.
Why is it that almost all of the fresh fish, including tilapia and shell fish on display in your supermarket is from CHINA or THAILAND or some other far off place and to get American shrimp you have to ask (and then someone will get it from the back.)
How about those Chinese tires (400,000 and counting) that are falling apart and for which there is no recall as yet and unlikely that the distributor can afford to reimburse anyone?
And of course there is that toothpaste from China with just a touch of ANTI-FREEZE in it to make you really sick. Hello FDA!!!
And finally a word about our front porch railings.......#*@+#?*)#!
