Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.
Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it "Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold."
No Marriott Downtown
Apollo group has announced that construction of a Marriott Hotel downtown is no longer in the planning. Another hotel will be sought.

Nancy Ryer has been named the new chairperson of the Suffolk County Republican Party.
Cardinale to Dip Into Reserves
Supervisor Cardinale says that he will look at withdrawing from the Town reserve fund in order to keep tax increases down for the 2010 budget. The Town presently has about $10 million in the reserve fund.
Tale of Two Reservations
The Poospatuck Tribe in Mastic will have to stop selling cigarettes to the general public as of Friday, 9/25. This came about following objections by Mayor Bloomberg who felt that NYC was getting shortchanged on "smoke" revenues.
Meanwhile Gov. David Paterson gave a big push to the Shinnecocks by endorsing their plans to gain tribal recognition by the Department of Interior. The final objective is, of course, to open one or even two casinos on Long Island (perhaps even at EPCAL). Remember the Southampton Supervisor said that she would discourage any plans for a casino on the present Shinnecock reservation.
