Cristoforo Colombo 1451-20 May 1506

This week we celebrate the voyages of Christopher Columbus to the New World.  He has been much maligned in recent years but there is a question of where we would be today without his determination to sail west to find new worlds instead of the prevailing thinking at the time to sail eastward for  a safer journey.

Born in the Republic of Genoa (now Northwestern Italy) and supported by the Spanish Catholic clergy, he made 4 voyages to the Indies and Central America and thus began the influence of Spain throughout the East Indies, Hispaniola, South and Central America.  Read about him again.

Board Deciding on School Trips

The Riverhead School Board will be making decisions regarding several out-of-state trips planned for various student groups.  The Navy Junior ROTC would like to compete in a drill competition to be held in Bethel Connecticut on November 17.  Four (4) students would like to compete in a cross country event (Oct 20) to be held in Providence RI.  The meet is at the invitation of Brown University.  A French studies group of some 45 seventh and eighth graders would like to participate in a spring trip to Quebec City in Canada. The Board will determine if funding is available.
