Paving Owner Disputes Shutdown

An article by Erica Jackson in the Independent-Watchman of November 9 presented GL Paving's status and opposition to the closing of the asphalt plant at the Reclamation site. The description of the fumes emanating from the plant as a "sweet stench" is a remarkable stretch from reality. It isn't "sweet" when you have to slam the doors and windows of your home tightly to prevent these noxious odors from entering your lungs and almost make you vomit Mr. Lyons contends that the smell is not as bad as the residents claim. Tell that to the residents who are already in ill health or to the children who refuse to play outside because of that smell.

There is no backing down here. We want that plant closed. Move it if you will but get it out of here. We understand that the plant can be moved in three to four week's time and without great difficulty. The problem is getting the DEC to issue a BUD (Beneficial use determination) for a new location. Are we misreading this or is the DEC showing a general lack of enthusiasm for this whole thing?
