Town Halts Reclamation Project

The Riverhead Town Board has halted all operations at the Reclamation Project on Youngs Avenue for at least six months. The action comes as a result of a review of the report submitted by FTM. The FTM report essentially advised that instead of the 1.3 to 1.5 million yards estimated for excavation and processing at the start of the project, that the original estimate should have been closer to 3.0 million yards.

As of now approximately 1.0 million yards has been removed leaving, in FTM's estimate, another 2.0 million yards to go. (A figure greater than the original, total estimate). The Town has now terminated the consulting contract of Young & Young and has advised the DEC of it's action regarding the shutdown. The Town Supervisor, Phil Cardinale, has not indicated what additional measures will be taken with regard to recovering from this setback or where specific accountability will be directed.
