Public Not Happy With EPCAL Selection
The Riverhead Resorts proposal for a recreation area at EPCAL has drawn objections from many quarters. Jim Stark, the Republican candidate for Supervisor has found an issue to run with and has held several news conferences to loudly protest the decision by the Town Board. Stark believes the decision to open contract negotiations with the Resorts group was not well considered. He doubts that the controversial 35 story ski lift wil ever be built and also believes that the 90 acre lake is a major problem since it requires tearing up the unused, 7000 foot runway. (The runway is constructed of several layers of re bar laden concrete)
Meanwhile proponents of the EPCAL Center (and racing enthusiasts) are meeting at the Grumman aircraft site on rte 25 on September 28 to loudly announce their support for the EPCAL Center project (the only other bidder). Cardinale, on WRIV radio, indicated that the Town is only opening contract talks and nothing has been finalized. He does favor the Riverhead Resorts plan because of the estimated financial gain to the Town which, he says, would retire the Town's debt and possibly reduce taxes by as much as 25%.
Stark Not Forgetting The Landfill
Jim Stark is not about to forget the Reclamation Project in his campaign speeches. He never misses an opportunity to raise the Town's huge bill to reclaim the landfill only to halt the operation when it was approximately one third completed at an amazing $40 million plus an additional tab of $9-10 million to cap the place. Obviously the Town needs one of these EPCAL deals to clear the ledger.
