Sand Mining - an Explosive Issue

The mining of sand in Riverhead has suddenly become a major campaign issue and may overshadow all others. Accusations are flying faster than autumn leaves. The Town is accused of mining sand without a permit and with removal of excessive loads of sand from a construction site. A Town Board member says that he questioned the excavation work and advised the Supervisor and, it is suggested nothing was done to stop it or look into the possible violation. John Dunleavy is the Councilman who questioned the sand mining and suggests that Highway Superintendent "Geo"Woodson and Supervisor Cardinale were made aware of the situation.

(In a related story, the court has ruled that the Town cannot stop Crown Sanitation from mining sand on it's property on Youngs Avenue).

Meet The Candidates at Calverton

The Greater Calverton Civic Association in conjunction with the Wading River Association will hold a Meet the Candidates night at the Riley Elementary School at 7:00 pm Wednesday, October 15. The Association did not include the names of the candidates in their announcement.

The recent Meet the Candidates night at the Polish Hall sponsored by the 912 Project was an outstanding success proving that the public has a renewed interest in public affairs and the candidates that represent them.

Dispatchers on Referendum

Supervisor Cardinale, in trying to settle the dispute regarding Town controlled emergency dispatchers as opposed to County dispatchers, says that the issue will appear on the November ballot as a referendum suggesting that the public be made aware of the widely different cost issues involved in retaining Town control. Cardinale has indicated that the previously issued budget would significantly increase if the Town kept the dispatch function.

East End Hospitals/Empire Still Talking

Need Your Own Little Island?
Plum Island, long the island which performed research and/or acted to quarantine animals with infectious diseases will be on the market for real estate purchase. (But not until a new research facility is completed in Kansas.)

Ice Hockey at The Rinxx
The Rinxx ice facility in Hauppauge on Terry Road, provides two arenas for ice hockey and ice skating for the general public. The arena provides scheduling for all levels of hockey skills from junior leagues, high school teams, college teams and non-academic leagues. Its fast moving with plenty of action for players who like a great sport. Riverhead could use a rink of this caliber to bring ice hockey to the East End.
