The residents of Riverhead voted down the Board of Education proposal for a renewal, construction and repair program which would have cost the School District $123 million dollars in a bond issue.
Included in the proposal were more than 50 new classrooms, renovation of many others, moving administrators out of trailers and into offices, closing of one elementary school, repairs to gyms, cafeterias, sports fields, parking areas and the school bus garage.
The citizens, (almost 62%) rejected the proposal as too costly, exposing the tax payers to a burden that was unsustainable at this time. The final vote was 2274 against the proposal and 1385 for it although the final tally is not in.
