NBC Report on Horton in Riverhead. 8 ft of water in some areas. (Horton runs between the Osborn Circle and Reeve)

Floods Swamp Riverhead and Long Island
There was hardly a road to turn onto this Tuesday as the heavy rains washed out many roadways in the township.  The parking field at Wal-Mart was nothing but a huge lake.  The intersection at Roanoke and Middle Road were impassable and had drivers going across muddy grass areas to make a turn.  The parking lot at the Calverton Post Office was a small pond forcing postal patrons to use the Main Post Office on Route 25.  The circle or "roundabout" at the intersection of Osborn and Middle Road was completely flooded in all directions as were the lakes on either side of the roadway.  Rain subsided in the afternoon and the newly formed lakes began to recede.

Shinnecock Nation In Final Steps
The Shinnecock Indian Nation passed a major obstacle this week when their application for formal recognition went unchallenged.  In the event that formal recognition is given by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) the tribe may seek to establish a casino here on the Island, a culmination of many years of trying to acheive that goal.

Watch Your Pocketbooks - Albany at Work
There are some lawmakers in the State capitol who would like to take away your right to vote on your local school budget.  Lets say that your community votes down a school budget.  The Assembly, under their proposal, could mandate a 3% budget increase regardless of the vote.  Keep a watchful eye out for this or you won't have anything to say about how the local school board spends your money.
