The Town of Riverhead has approved the site plan for construction of a Lowes home improvement store on the Suffolk Life property on Route 58. The newspaper had stopped publishing last year and the building has been vacant.
Big Fine for Riverhead
Supervisor Sean Walter announced that the Town will have to pay a $25,000 fine for illegal sandmining on a property in Jamesport.
GOP Sorting Things Out
Nassau Attorney Bruce Blakeman has been selected by the just concluded GOP convention to run for U.S. Senate opposing current Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Economist David Malpass received enough votes to secure a position in the September primary. Joe Dioguardi failed to get enough votes to make the primary.
Gary Bernsten had already been selected to run against Chuck Schumer, but Jay Townsend received just enough to find his way onto the September primary as well.
Rick Lazio was, of course, selected to run for Governor earlier in the week. Steve Levy and Carl Paladino did not get enough votes to compete in the fall but Paladino promised that he would secure the necessary 15,000 petition signatures to work his way onto the primary ballot.

Doesn't look like NY will be the scene of excitement a la Massachusetts election of Scott Brown. All the excitement will be about the intrigue and not the issues. And no one has the political clout to make DioGuardi do the right thing: step down and let the right candidate have a better chance. (Yeah, yeah. I know about 2000.)
