United States Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood has announced that helicopter rules for flights over Long Island and especially the North Fork will be firmly in place by July 4. Regulators have been working on regulations for several years now that limit helicopters to specific routes and minimum altitudes of 2500 feet.
Redistricting Suffolk County-Not So Fast
The non-partisan commission that has only met twice in the last year is seriously behind in their mandate to redraw Suffolk County legislative lines. Truth is that they have not even started drawing the lines which would change legislative districts and, of course, representation in several possible new districts. The deadline is Wednesday and it is not likely to be met.
New Food Market?
Aldi Supermarkets owned by the richest man in Germany (Karl Albrech) has been looking at Riverhead for a possible location for a new supermarket. The search is being conducted mainly on route 58 with little consideration for a downtown location. Aldi is a discount food supermarket selling mostly house branded products. Many Trader Joe advocates have been pushing for a Trader Joe move to Riverhead but have yet to convince the popular store which has only one location on Long Island (Lake Grove).
Whooping Cough at Riley.
One student at Riley Elementary had been diagnosed with whooping cough and has now been cleared to return to class.
