School Board Meets to Finalize Budget
The Riverhead School Board will meet tonight in an attempt to finalize the school budget for the coming year. The District has already cut 12 teachers and 9 assistants and has now also reduced many of the extra curricular activities and programs heretofore part of the Riverhead scene.


Some school sports programs have been curtailed including consolidating the JV and Varsity golf teams.  Adult education programs have been eliminated as well. all in an attempt to reduce the budget by some $3.2 million dollars in order stay below the state mandated 2% cap increase.


A school budget vote is expected to be scheduled for May 15 between 6 am and 9 pm.


Riverhead and Southold Remain in Same District
Initially the redistricting plans for the State Assembly districts involved separating Riverhead from Southold. The new plan keeps the two townships in the same North Fork Assembly District but Shelter Island will be reassigned to the South Fork Assembly District.  The North Fork district will be renamed Second Assembly District and the South Fork District will be renamed as the First Assembly District.


Moodys Downgrades Suffolk
Moodys Investor Services has downgraded the bond status of Suffolk County from A1 to Aa2 because of it's negative outlook, tight cash position, lack of reserves and a serious budget gap.


Governor In Pension Battle
Gov.Andrew Cuomo is in a difficult pension battle with unions as he attempts to overhaul NY State Pension Systems for State workers.
