Riverhead Building Supply to EPCAL Recent site plan approvals at EPCAL have resulted in increased activity in land purchases. Riverhead Building Supply is now in contract for a site purchase with an early closing date (3/1/07).

Recent Shooting Downtown (Reason for concern?) A recent non-fatal shooting in the downtown area may or may not be gang related. There were indications that the incident was somehow related to a similar incident of a few weeks ago in the same general area.

Shelter Volunteers Won't Walk Dogs with Muzzles
Problems at the animal shelter on Youngs Ave. Authorities want all dogs muzzled when being walked outside the shelter by volunteers. The volunteers say that the restrictive devices aggravate the animals and actually make them more dangerous. Rex Farr, a strong advocate of proper animal handling at the shelter is threatening legal action.

Town Takes Bids on Cap Design Town authorities are now reviewing bids to design a cap for the ill fated landfill. Have not ruled out reclamation but that concept is slowly fading and is not likely at this stage.

A First Class Town? Not so Much! Every indication that the attempt to change the Town's status from second class to first class or even suburban has not met with great enthusiasm. Following a public hearing and less than full support from the Board, it would appear that the idea is on the back burner for now.

Broadwater........Do We Have Enough Info? It isn't clear why the Federal Regulatory Agency wants o cut off public discussion of the Broadwater Gas Terminal project. It just seems that there are more voices to be heard and while there seems to be an overwhelming objection to the project there may be other sides to this story. Lester Davis, of Calverton, for example, in a recent letter to the editor, stated that Riverhead could lose some $15 million dollars a year in taxes for some 20 years. I'm listening.

School District Reserve Fund Vote on Tuesday When the residents of Riverhead approved the school budget they also approved a $10 million dollar reserve fund for repairs to the various schools in the district. The vote on Tuesday asks for approval to actually spend the reserve funds. At the High School, 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. Tuesday, February 6.

Do Something Nice Today When word came down from our guys in Afghanistan that the local kids wanted desperately to attend school but didn't have any school supplies the folks at the web site Do One Nice Thing jumped into action. They put out the word on their site, spelled out items needed and where to mail the package. Nothing spectacular. Just pens, pencils, notebooks. You can drop in some hard candy (no chocolate) or cookies, no one will complain. Check out the details on their site doonenicething.com. You can always count on the American G.I. to do something good for people.
