'Tis the Season for This and That....

As I sit writing this (at 11 pm Saturday night), the Weather Channel block to the right reads 25 degrees. The bird baths, full from collected rainwater, are now frozen. I've turned off the outdoor Christmas lights early because I didn't want to go out there when it was really cold. Why do all the lights work when you test them on the kitchen floor and then only half come on when you put them on the trees?
I've lowered the tattered American flag, badly shredded by the Baiting Hollow winds and have raised a new American flag in it's place. The new flag flew over the U.S. Army Airfield at Kandahar in Afghanistan on September 11, 2004 and we are extremely proud of that. Just below it we also raised a new State of Texas flag to replace one that was also torn up. Why Texas? Well you have to go back to your roots, or at least the roots of the better half of this outfit. In addition, we have great affinity for the independence shown by Texans and the people of the West in general.

Well it is a new day and we have a blanket of snow out there with more where that came from. Seeing more Christmas lights on houses as we get closer to that day. I wonder about those who put up their lights when it is 70 degrees and sunny. Do they get a special message or e-mail from somewhere telling them it is time?
I see that Darren Johnson, who lost his bid for a councilman seat in the recent election, is suggesting that the Riverhead downtown area be incorporated as a separate village. Suggests that it would give business and residents in that area greater control. Don't know if that would ever fly. Stay tuned. I would like to see Baiting Hollow get it's own zip code. As you know Calverton comes up automatically when you enter 11933 on-line. I suppose you have to have a post office before you can have your own zip. Oh well!
Speaking of post offices...whoever decided to build the new post office on the corner of Mill Road and Rte 25?
The location is questionable, the lobby poorly laid out and the parking inadequate. I'll still go to the one in Calverton. It's small, friendly and they do the job nicely.
Craig Mitnick, an attorney and legal contributor to Fox News says that the turmoil revolving around the concern the public is having regarding the absense of "Christmas" in store advertising, displays or in-store greetings stems from too much lawyering. In other words too many lawyers willing to file frivolous suits at the drop of a hat. The recent filing of complaints by parents of children at the Riley Elementary School with regard to renting of space to a church group is an example. (Read Civiletti's blog for the complete story)
We have been through a few skirmishes together. There is the asphalt plant that may be silenced, the cul-de-sac that, hopefully, won't be cut through, the Town's on-again, off-again attitude regarding Crown and most likely, more to come. I believe the Town knows that we intend to stand firmly on all issues.
