Town Board Wants a Raise
It was announced this week that the four Board Members of the Town of Riverhead are seeking a $15,000 annual raise from their current $35,000. That would be $50,000 for what (by charter) is a part time function. The suggestion of a raise is not without controversy. The radio hosts at station WRIV have widely different views on the subject. Jay Oliver, host of the early morning Dawn Patrol program agrees with the raise while Bruce Tria, host of the 10 AM show (and station manager) is strongly opposed. An informal poll of listeners was unanimously against the increase.
Oliver felt that Board members are underpaid when compared to similar positions around the county but Tria felt that it would violate the charter and was not justified in view of the heavy tax burden facing the residents from all quarters. Tria also suggested that this would not be attempted in an election year.

Runway Trial
You may not have been keeping up with it, but there is currently a civil trial underway in Central Islip wherein Northeastern Holdings is seeking damages from Riverhead regarding having their runway (Calverton) authority terminated.
