Roundabout is Not Fairplay
The much heralded roundabout or traffic solution for the hazardous intersection at the corners of Middle Road and Osborne is about to be put out for bid. The cost, including the acquisition of 3 acres of property needed for the project is just under a half million dollars. Now much of this will come from the State, with Riverhead making up the difference. Questioned about the persistent flooding in the area (the roadway between Osborne and Horton always floods after a heavy rain-storm) the Town replied, almost as an afterthought, that this project will take care of that. Huh?
Now, as you know, there is an existing flashing traffic light (amber facing Osborne traffic, and red facing the Middle Road traffic)at this intersection right now. . Couldn't a standard red and green traffic light at this corner solved the problem quickly and inexpensively since the traffic signal is already in place? The half million dollars came from tax payer money somewhere so it isn't free money to be spent as we wish. The flood? Fix it with Town money and help the residents on Horton with their flooded basement problems.
Wal-Mart. Getting There Slowly but Surely.
The site plan for the new Wal-Mart is up for review next week and hopefully will be approved for the location on Rte 58 opposite Tanger quickly. Many object to these large stores on Rte 58 but the reality is that they are here and here to stay. A recent trip into the Home Expo in Commack was an eye opener. Not only is there a Costco and Target in the same area but just down the road you have shopping choices of a new Wal-Mart, a new HomeDepot and a new Kohls. Couldn't EPCAL have had some acreage set aside for a shopping complex like that one? Ski jumps are more fun.
Little Flower Not In School Board Plans
Members of the Riverhead School Board have indicated that they will no longer pursue the plan to merge the Little Flower School on Wading River Road into the Riverhead School District.
Do One Nice Thing Wants Help
Perhaps you will recall that the good people at Do One Nice Thing have been doing a great job at helping our guys in Afghanistan assist the Afghan kids in getting school supplies. Just some notebooks, pens and pencils made the world of difference and Americans have jumped in to help. Now the organization is asking for some basic help for a middle school in Mississippi. Same needs: See it at doonenicething.com
