This and that........Has it occurred to anyone that the recent vote for the 14.7 million dollar bond issue which approved the construction of a new firehouse on Roanoke Avenue was given the ok by just 393 citizens out of 30,000 residents? That decision by such a small group has obligated the rest of the community to over $100 more in taxes every year for the next 20 years. Hello! Now Ron Hariri, potential candidate for Supervisor, is considering a legal challenge to the vote.
The Riverhead School Budget will probably break the 100 million dollar mark. Holy increase Batman! Right now it sits at $99,962,785 up from $93,152,740 last year. Increase is 7.31% with the final numbers depending on the State participation. You can vote on the budget on May 15.
You will also vote on a proposition to purchase 45 new school buses over the next 7 years at a cost of 3.5 million dollars. No silver lining here folks. Meanwhile, the Guv has worked out an ok for 100 additional charter schools (50 in the city) and the rest for who knows where and with too many conditions to make it a winner.
April 17 is set for the Riverhead Library vote. Proposal has a 6.9% increase over last year for a total of $2,499,133. Copies of the budget are available at the Library after April 2 and an information hearing on the budget is schedule for April 10 at 7 pm.
Jim Stark (R) and Sean Walter (C) are both considering a run for the supervisor post and may challenge Cardinale in the fall. Stark is a former supervisor 1995-1997 and Walter is the current Chairman of the Riverhead Conservative Party.
