The volume and variety of imports from China to the U.S. is amazing to most of us. Of greater concern is the lack of monitoring by our own government. The revelation that millions of toy products from the Asian nation are contaminated with lead is a scary situation to say the least. Not only are toys contaminated, but other plastic or vinyl products such as baby bibs have been found to contain lead. Aren't these little guys always chewing on a bib?
This disregard for our country and our people is so outrageous that the head of the responsible manufacturer in China decided to end it all.
Connecticut has decided to require the U.S. company (Mattel or Fisher Price) to monitor and sign off on the disposal of all recalled products. How many more products should be investigated? Our imported food supply must receive more attention by the FDA. As an example: over 50% of the apple juice sold in the U.S. comes from China. What? Whatever happened to the apple growers in New York State and Washington?

This Just In: (8/20/07) New Zealand announces a huge recall of clothing made in China because of large amounts of FORMALDEHYDE found in the material. Chemicals were 900 times more than acceptable limits. (Hello Washington. Are you listening?)

The Gangs of AugustThe Supervisors of Southampton (Skip Heaney) and Southold (Scott Russell) have now publicly expressed concern about gang activity in their townships and are promising to take action to eliminate the scourge. Too little? Too late? The families of the three college students murdered in New Jersey a few weeks ago must wish that authorities had taken a greater interest in what was going on in their state.
