L.I. Towns Holding on to Reserve Funds
The NY State Controller's office has advised that a number of Long Island towns have considerable reserve funds on hand and yet are planning to raise taxes. Babylon, for example, has indicated that it plans a 9% increase in property taxes despite a reserve fund of over $54 million dollars. The reserve is equal to 37% of the Town's budget. Other towns including Brookhaven, Hempstead, Islip, Smithtown, South Hampton and Riverhead have a surplus which exceeds 25% of their budgets.

Riverhead recently added $490,584 in spending to it's budget using just $280,000 of the surplus funding.

Notes
The Riverhead Charter School will cap student enrollment to just 240 students for the coming year.

The plan to replace Riverhead police dispatchers with County employees is being protested by the Riverhead PD dispatcher group.

The Town Board confirmed Diane Wilhelm as the new Town Clerk at the Town Board meeting this past week.

It is now reported that Legislator Ed Romaine may not seek the vacant office of Brookhaven Town Supervisor. The office was vacated when Supervisor Brian Foley unseated Ceasar Trunzo for the NY State Senate.
