A Vote with Unintended Consequences
When State Assemblyman Dan Losquadro (R) voted for Cuomo's gun control bill he probably was unaware of how it would jeopardize his run for Brookhaven Highway Superintendent.  Losquadro's vote for the arms legislation has angered many Long Island Second Amendment advocates who threaten to scuttle his campaign for the Brookhaven position. The withdrawal of support gives an unintended boost to the candidacy of Kathleen Walsh, a Brookhaven Town Board member who changed parties from Republican to Independent in order to secure a voting line.  A small voter turnout may favor Walsh.

Zoning Board of Appeals Thursday 7 PM
The Riverhead Zoning Board of Appeals will meet on Thursday evening January 24 at 7 PM.  This is the meeting that was deferred from December and will include a public hearing on a variance application for locating a cat shelter and treatment center on a Young's Avenue agricultural parcel.

The applicant is the North Fork Animal Welfare League. An overwhelming majority of residents in the Preserve and surrounding communities were opposed to the application and have voiced their opposition through letters, e-mails and petitions. They have also engaged legal representation.

Those opposing the application have urged their supporters to attend the Thursday evening hearing and suggested that it would be best to arrive early for consultation with their attorney.

(The North Fork Animal Welfare League was previously selected to run the Town animal shelter at the east end of Youngs Ave)
